For thousands and thousands of years, most men and women lived lives of true desperation. Most lived on just a few square yards of earth, scraping at it from first light to dark, wringing a poor sustenance from the reluctant dirt that more often than not was then stolen from them by the stronger, the better armed. Most people lived and died within a few miles from their birthplace, never seeing what was over the nearest hill.... and most lived lives that could be best described as wretched...... Think about them the next time you swing your leg over your truly marvelous bike, think of them as you change your horizons effortlessly, seeing wonders that none of them ever dreamed of, think of them when you stop at a clean, bright restaurant and imbibe enough calories in an hour that would have kept them alive for a week...... All my rides are haunted... haunted by those who came before, upon whose blood and sweat and labor and misery are my joys based.... in some way, I try and ride for all of them. All of them.

Our dear friend has a gift relating his thoughts and experiences in such a way as to make us see and relive his actions and his thoughts. A wonderful gift that! bernie

I agree with you all. Add to that Jack, that the poorest person in this country is far more blessed than many in other parts of the world.

Agreed. But think of what generations that follow us will experience (hopefully). The chance to truly travel throughout the universe and meet different species, experience new foods, drinks, geographical oddities, etc and all the wonders of the universe that we can't even begin to understand. My wife thinks I'm crazy but I've told her I'd take a one way trip into space in an instant, just to see what was out there. No need to come back, just keep on going. Maybe I am crazy but I'd jump at the chance in a heartbeat.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm one of the two richest men in the USA. I don't have any wealth, but Gawd am I rich. You mentioning the generations before us makes me think of my maternal Grandmother. Little Granny was born in 1888 and lived until 1986. She was married at thirteen and had fourteen kids. Seven boys and seven girls. My mother was supposed to be the last, so her father gave her the middle name of Omega. Someone should have told him what made babies, they had one more. She only left Florida twice, when my dad took her to the smokie mountains. She thought she was in real mountains. I guess I've drifted here a little bit,, the point I think I'm trying to make is they didn't have to worry about all the things we do today. We have to worry about keeping the car payment made, the house payment, all the insurances, heck the list is unending. They worried about what they were going to eat the next day. Don't ever think that just because they had it hard, they didn't have it good. They lived!

Well put CJ. I myself find it very hard to put thoughts into words. In a lot of ways I think that even though life was harder in the years past, it was also very richer. Friends, family seemed to be closer. Help and to help others didn't seem to have the "What's in it for me" mentality. As well as the "The world owes me a living" that some of the younger generations seem to have. There are times when I wish I could just find some land and just leave the outside world and live a more simple life. James

I was just looking at some family photos yesterday from the 1930's and was thinking that I have been very fortunate that all generations before me gave me what I got today. Between the radical groups and the crazy politicions I worry about my children and grandchildren"s future. We may have lived in the best times past and future.

All I can say is, I agree I have lived through the bad and the good so now is my time to just crouse along and take what comes along and hope for the best.

CJ, you sure have an awesome way of flowing words together! That being said....I think I was born 200 years too late! In those days, you could earn your bread by the sweat of your brow, and nothing affected the height you could rise to but your own skills and determination. Things made sense then, everybody knew what was right, and common sense was actually common. I think, with all we have, we've lost so much more.... and we are truly poorer for it!

Just watched "The Grapes of Wrath" a couple of nights ago. Besides the political overtones of the times, it shows true desperation. Well worth watching because it puts things into perspective. We are truly blessed. I cannot afford a new Harley or Goldwing, but I have a fabulous 84 Aspy. Life is truly good. Jim(inSC)

An article in an Amish newspaper commented on tourists wanting to be Amish because of how they pictured the simple lifestyle. The article went on to explain how very few people would accept the strict austere lifestyle. However, they suggested that people, if they wanted to, could become a little Amish by being less materialistic.
