Car tires --why not

I have over 30,000 mi. on car tires and I wouldn't run anything else. I run only runflat tires. I have tried both and I prefer the runflats. The sidewalls are much stiffer than regular tires. When the pavement is wet the traction is better than any m/c tire out there. Plus you if you should have a flat, you have the added security of being able to ride on a flat tire rather than being stuck on the side of the road.

I could go on and on.

If you are interested in the idea you should check out the http://www.gl1800riders.com

I say axe all car tire threads immediately and send the poster this link,         http://gl1800riders.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=31
I have seen that video posted more times than I can count and always by someone who has never tried it.

I was 'talking' to a friend in Australia and he happened to mention he has a 15" radial on the rear wheel of his Gold Wing, I think he said it is a 1200. He said he is using a tire from one of the smart cars and it works well!

I don't agree, I'd suggest compiling all the references to C/T's and put them under the Reference or General sections. Why refer to another forum when we have some really experienced members here who from my experience can discuss the pro's and cons. Pretty skookum advice there! :(

I am one of those experienced members and I am just sick of it. If a person wants to learn about a subject they should go where the info is and the GL1800 darksiders forum is the place in this case. If they are not interested in learning they should refrain from posting on the subject.

Well, since I'm adding a sidecar to my rig I plan to go with a CT on the rear and a reversed rear tire on the front, probably an Avon the guys over on the sidecar forums prefer. The sidecar already uses a CT and has a braking system I''ll eventually tie into the bike's rear master cylinder.

Avon actually is the only bike tire company I have found where they make special tires for sidecar rigs.

Quite a while back, Steve decided that the subject of Car Tires was a very real topic and since it will always keep coming up, we started indexing them.   This thread will also end up in that index.

Look on any main Forum Page and over on the right you will see "Post Index"

Amazing the kind of stuff you can find under that little link.

Why, you just might even find the subject of Car Tires

Hey Bag,

What kind of car tire did you find that could work on an 1100?

This summer I mounted a Bridgestone Potenza tire on my spare rim and installed it on my '05 Wing. So far I have around 15,000 miles on it. If I had left the E3 tire on the bike I would be replacing it by now.

I ran the Iron Butt Rally using that tire. I have mixed reviews on it. For long distance slab miles it is great. Good traction and mucho miles on the tread as it is rated for 50,000 miles. On a bike I'm sure you could get 60-70K. Where I had my problems was in cornering. It takes more force to initiate a turn and to hold the bike over. On twisty roads I found myself running wide when I was tired. So if I am going to ride when I know I will be doing a lot of twisties, I will put the E3 back on.

Many other Wingers use Kumho tires. I think the profile is different on those tires. Next year I might buy and install a Kumho and give that a try.

About a month ago after reading so much controversy here on the forum about car tires on an 1800 and all the negative advice from members who NEVER had or never TRIED a car tyre on their wing and the positive advice from the members who ACTUALLY TRIED  the car tire on the rear of their 1800s, I decided to try one on my 1800. I have had the tire on for about a month now and as anybody who knows me I drive like a man possessed on the twistys,The roads in Ireland are narrow and not great surface and it rains here almost every day and can I say( in my opinion) the car tire is the way to go for me .......................

The traction in the wet and dry is far Superior to any motorcycle tyre I've had, I noticed on travelling fast in the twistys that when I accelerate out of them there is NO SLIP. I have noticed several times on the 1800 coming out of a sharp twisty on a bike tire that if you blip the throttle the back end of the bike steps out, but no more, it sticks to the road like glue. I even tried on a wet road with leaves in a straight line to spin the rear wheel and it would not spin, just solid traction and on braking it is the same ..

I expect to get around 60000 miles out of this tire, I am running a run flat  Dunlop SP winter sports 3 at 35 lb pressure ,

The bike is far more comfortable as well .

The only drawback I find is on the road to my house where there are deep groves in the road for tractors and the bike is twitchy when the tire hits the edge of the grove. I am well use to it now and it does not bother me .

I also find I am not fighting with the bike on a white line anymore.

So if you haven't tried a CT, don't critise others until you have tried it yourself ..

I am working on putting a camera on the tow hitch of my bike and am going to record the tire working at speed on the straights and on very twisty roads. I hope to have this up in the coming weeks. I scrape pegs all the time and when I took of my rear bridgestone I had a good look at how far up the side the actual wear was and it was hardly on the wall at all and that is what made my mind up for me.

So for me, I am converted and for the ever righteous Insurance buffs, I informed my Insurance company of the modification to the bike and had no problem ..

Remember we are all over 18 years of age here and we have the right to choose what we want to do with our lives or what not to do with our llives. I am not telling you to change to a car tire, I am merely expressing MY experience with a car tire fitted to the rear of MY 1800 wing. It is up to you to make the choice to go to a car tire or not. I had the choice to try or not to try it and made up my OWN MIND to try it and I love it. Ciaran

I haven't bought one yet but I know what to look for. I want to find something local before I order on line.

Here's 2 I'm looking at on line.
