I'm just agreeing PB... :) ...Had I lived extravagantly up to this point (as most I know have done) I'd be working like a Dog somewhere today as a result of the perpetualness of that lifestyle.

I've lived on the road doing service work all over the Country at one point in my past, using my van and trailer as a home away from home and only using hotels/motels when I needed to; usually because I couldn't find a truck-stop to shower-up at... It's a choice of discipline and sacrifice as I see it.

Exavid couldn't be any more right in his statements. :cooler:

Being a 'computer' guy, I've always been a bit squeemish about turning over life-threatening situations, like controlling the brakes, to a computer.  (I know, airplanes probably couldn't fly without them, but I try not to think about that when I'm flying.)  For new 4-wheeled vehicles, you don't have much (if any) choice anymore and I've grown to appreciate how they work.  The most recent occasion I had to use them in my 4-wheeler was when I unexpectedly happened upon a (disconnected) wheel laying on its side in front of me on a rain-slick expressway.  Of course I slammed the brakes and the ABS took over - quite sure they kept me from going into an uncontrolled sideways slide. (And no, I didn't hit the wheel!)  ABS wasn't invented when my '88 Wing was made, but I'll most likely have them when and if I'm able to upgrade to a more current model! (Just can't seem to get this thing to wear out!)

My wife and I as well, have never bought a new car or truck since being married.

We had a great deal for several years, where we bought 3 cars for $400 a piece. A Ford Taurus, Lincoln Towncar, and an Olds Cutlass. (my brother-in-law had a transmission shop, and when customers would not come back to pay for there automatic rebuild, he would get a mx lean, and sell them to us for the cost of parts) He no longer owns that shop. I sure miss getting those cars.

I finally bought my wife the most exspensive car or truck (my truck is a Ford F350 4x4, with over 200,000 miles on it, $7000) that we have ever owned, a Cadillac Deville. It was a like new Florida car with 40,000 miles, for $10,000 plus tax. Our children could not believe that we had bought a car for more than a few hundred dollars! Where's the rust, Dad? lol

We did not buy another GL for 26 years either, because we had very little time to ride the one we had, with 3 children, why buy another, until they were up and running. As stated in a previous post, I tried not to put toys ahead of my family.

We ended up buying the 10 GL a year earlier than planned though, because we wanted one of the last to be built in Marysville. It came in the 1st week Honda released them in September, 2009.

I make a couple a year in the left seat, but I too have no new cage planned in the near future. Thanks.

PS. We were out to Des Moines this past year, and by the Grace of God, hope to be in Knoxville this summer.

We will have GL shirts on, and are not chapter members, (nothing against those that are) nor have we ever been. We ride alone.

I am buying dinner though, if you can get me to slow down long enough... You will need to meet my wife, as she thinks everyone is her friend.. never met anyone like her....crazy Oh ya, she loves motorcycles.....

Most folks who like to spout about the uselessness of safety features such as ABS and Air Bags and the like, have no understanding of them, and have never, or rarely had occasion to use them.

I am glad to say I am one of those who have not had to put the ABS to any great test, just a small judder on some loose gravel on a road, maybe twice at very low speed.

Since ABS is designed by engineering experts who design and test these things for our benifit, I am happy that should I need it, the ABS will do it's job, but it wil be in exceptional circumstances that I will. At 54 years old, I am happy to have additional help, to aid my reactions should the situation arise.

...not on that 1000 you won't.

The general consensus is that the older one gets, the more one finds a need for these advanced safety features. Nothing wrong with that IMO.

Easy to forget that the ABS wasn't available when the older Wings were made, ( or at least not on bikes) but if it was, I would have happily had it as a younger rider.

Anyone know how to retro fit ABS to a 1977 GL1000....:ROFL::ROFL:

As for racing bikes not having ABS, I am guessing that is because racing riders actually use skidding and sliding to their advantage on bends, something that the average road rider would not be likely to wish to employ.:shock::smiler::smiler:

Skidding and sliding is unavoidable due to the G-forces at work.

All racebikes used in MotoGP have some form of Traction Control.

Many racers don't like traction control and think it inhibits true ability providing unfair advantages to lesser experienced riders. When the rear wheel starts turning faster than the front wheel, applied power is cut one way or another beyond the riders control.

It's a safety feature designed solely for the mechanics of the bike and not for the rider, hence its allowance.

:)

Not to mention most races are run on a known surface with good sightlines. Not quite the same as a highway rider who has to be able to deal with surprises around every corner. As I said before as great a bike as the 1800 is I would have kept my 1500 if it weren't for the availability of ABS on the 1800. My only complaint with the 1800 is that ABS should be standard equipment on them.

Math Man,

I was wrong in stealing your thread in my previous posts. I most likely was intoxicated from crossing too many time zones, while trying my hand at drollery, and it did not work so well. lol They say sleep deprivation is worse than being drunk...Still no excuse..And to anyone else I offended...

As far as ABS, Airbags, and other innovations go, I am sure they are great to have, and then one wonders how they ever did without them. If you can get one with it, that will become the norm, but if not, you will most likely be ok too, until.... you find too late that you are not....

The 4 packages Honda has now, are nice, but as in Captain Midnight's post, ABS will become standard, and the ability to pick and choose will be over. It is too hard for dealers to stock the right color and package for a select group... Thanks.
