Awesome - I'll be printing this out and taking it to look at both bikes and insisting on test rides now. The better one will win - or neither if I need to keep looking. Thank you!

For that money, you could buy it alone to part out and make a profit. With all the bling, people would scarf on the stuff on ebay.

2nd bike was relisted last night for $1300:
" have reduced this bike down to 1300.00 dollars for quick sale motor is in excellent shape bike has a few items need tending to have ridden only one time fromm valdosta ga "

Another phone call to seller of the 2nd bike and now the story is he's had it only 3 weeks, can't tell me the mileage because the speedometer don't work, says he rides it all the time against doctors orders... I asked if the brakes work and he says it will stop but he can't get the front calipers to move they seem to be frozen...

I think I'll just go check out that first bike with the vetter.

At least that second guy was honest about it....Which if the first one runs and rides good the better deal....Or here's another idea...One of our members is selling his 89 1500 for quite a bit more but it is a great looking Wing, well worth every penny he is asking, custom paint job etc....Its listed in the For Sale/Wanted section....Wing is located in Valdosta Georgia...Just a thought.....

I saw that 1500 - looks great - however my wife put a $2000 cap on this little adventure and I can't find a even a high mileage beater 1500 anywhere for that.

I called the seller for more info on the 1st bike w/ the vetter.  He said he's only selling it cause he had a bad wreck on a bike a few years ago and got run over and got the fear.    When his friend decided to sell this bike he had always wanted it so bought it to see if he could get over the fear - but after a year and only putting about 100 miles on it the fear is still there so he's letting it go for less than what he's got in it so it doesn't just sit and ruin.  He said his friend had it for as long as he could remember and rode it to bike week in Daytona every year.

All the brakes work.  Spedo works.  Tires have good tread.  Cranks right up cold.  Choke cable needs greased said he just reaches down and pulls it by hand.  Said its always been garaged.  Its a got a new battery and new starter - when he was getting out from sitting 4 months over the winter he tried jumping it off and it fried the old starter so he had starter replaced and a new battery and service done - but still got the fear trying to ride so letting it go.

I'm taking tomorrow off and meeting him at noon.  *crosses fingers*

I know that feeling all so well, being married for 44 years to the same lady, but I believe that if you were to take your wife for one ride on that 1500, she would extend your budget...I don't own a 1500, wished I did, but from every 1500 owner on this forum, all you hear is how great the 1500's are...Not taking away from the 1800's but the 1500 always gets rave reviews.....I don't have any idea how far away RetNav lives from you but it might be worth the look....Who knows????

Claude.....

Wow 44 years - I've only been married 5 months! I really don't want get divorced so soon lol

I'm excited about the older g1100's for some reason they just appeal to me more. I'll save taking her for a ride on a newer model for a gl1800 after I get the Harley paid off in a couple of years :)

;) Good thinking.....Good luck with that 1100, just remember these babies don't like setting up....And they are real grouchy in cold weather about being cranked....But once they warm up you can't slow them down...Great bikes I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how well they handle and ride....Only thing that spooked me my first ride on a Wing was with all OVH engine bikes, with the center of gravity being high it corners differently that these low center of gravity Wings..Takes  a bit to get used to the way a Wing handles, but like someone else said, it won't be long before you are doing those twisties scraping the foot pegs....Post pictures if you get it.....

Okay, no one else has so let me throw it out.  I'd take the 1200 over the 1100.  Now I'll be followed by a hundred posts on the "dreaded stator plug" and the dogbone fuse but both of these are fixable.  If the stator gets toasted, there's the conversion to a GM car alternator,  Comes with hydraulic clutch, hyd lifters, linked brakes.  The Interstate & Aspencade have the shelter (false tank) blended into the fairing.  Parts (new & used) are easier to find and aftermarket accessories are still made and stocked.  Perfect for your needs.

Welcome to the site.

I hadn't really considered the 1200 because of those problems mentioned - they guy did say he would come down to $1800 on it which is within my range...   I like the 81 vetter better based on it being $500 cheaper and half the mileage and I just think it looks better... (I don't have hydaulic clutch or linked brakes on my fatboy so not sure I'd like/need them)

*sigh*  Looks can be deceiving - I pulled in and was like wow - that looks good.  Then I got a closer look - front left for seal shot, heavy rust in all the wrong places, black metalic paint was black runny paint job with ugly pink and green etc... glitter in it, chrome wasn't even nice... cranked right up (because he already warmed it up) - wife asks if it leaks cause of oil and radiator fluid in and he says he just topped it off... he says I can take it for a spin 1.5 up the road to garbage dump and back - I kept going to end of road 5 miles and back it had already overheated to redline, way too freaking loud to consider commuting on even with full face on, and couldn't get it up over 60, all cables looked frayed and taped and needed replaced, lots of sun damage to brake resorvoir, throttle hard to turn and sticking at different points no fun... but with it overheated so bad so quick no way I could have got it home - something major definitely wrong with the engine.  Thanked him for his time and ran away.

Checked out he gl1100 in macon on the way back - didn't even bother to take it for ride (no brakes was the last of the worries).

I've got the want for gl1100 out of my system.  Their just too small for me - don't like the floor boards on them at all - felt very cramped on these - gl1200 probably too small for me too - maybe a gl1500 or gl1800 will fit better - looks like I'll be saving up.

What else was wrong with the one in Macon besides the brakes locked up ?

Honestly didn't even crank it or check it out visually - just sat on it and had the same problems with the floorboards and foot controls being so far in for my legs I didn't even want to try riding it.

Well I don't like the floor boards either ! But I have sent this guy a deposit on this bike and plan on trying to get it home next weekend . Does it look ok ? He says most of the problems are minor cosmetics besides the brakes need bleeding and the speedo is not working , I have one of those tho . I hope I did not make a mistake !! Thes bikes are a problem for those that are not built for one I stand all of 5'10 1/5 inches and they fit good . He says it runs great !! Don't look too bad in the fotos , I ain't hung up on looks really . You gotta remember these bikes are 30 years old , they need a little tlc but this will be my 5th one and I like them very much .

I have front pegs and a stock gear shift lever to repalce them with , I might take them with me and change them on the spot.

twopeanuts, I'm reading between the lines here but I'm thinking a Goldwing will not be the bike for you as they all have the same "standard" rider position. While I haven't ridden a 1200 or 1500, I have ridden an 1800 and my own 1100 and the seating position is very similar. For relaxing on the highway I sometimes use the highway pegs but in the twisties when I'm getting serious I use the factory pegs. The factory pegs are also in the right place to stand up and ease a painful butt on a long ride. I rode an 1800 with boards and didn't like the boards for a number of reasons.

picasso: Yeah it looks ok - like he said minor cosmetic stuff like seats a little rough - didn't really check for rust or fork leaks or any of the stuff I went over on the 1st bike.

Heading to Rome tomorrow to check out the 84 gl1200 with 80k - its at a small cycle shop and he said it would be no problem to let me take it for a spin to see if like the way it rides. My first bike was a 80 CB750 and I really did like the rider position on it with pegs - maybe its just the floor boards on these - I'm thinking if I get rid of the floor boards and can actually use the toe shifter (I don't like heel shifting, even unbolted the heel kick one on my fatboy) it might work for me. Only one way to find out - go ride a 1200 and see.
