I can get a re-cover for the seat for about 55.00 bucks from JC Whitney made by Saddlemen , and a few nicks here and there is just normal wear-n-tear . The brakes are not much trouble to fix I just want to get it home and then take it to my mechanic dude and let him flush and bleed the front brakes , This is a difficult job on these bikes but most everything else is ok. I hope you will find one that fits you comfortably
You will have to get used to the heads sticking out , I really banged up my shins till I did .
If you are real short or very tall these wings can be uncomfortable . I got the impression the owner did not really know much about one of these and has not had this one very long , said he is selling because he thinks he is getting too old for two wheels and had two heart stints put in . Said he is going to try a trike . He seemed nice and honest to me what did you think about him?

Good , I hate it for him that he can,t ride two anymore , but he does want to ride!!

I lived in Doraville close to Mercer University and used to own a small Restaurant in DECATUR GA , on church street next to the MARTA train station, near the Dekalb co. courthouse.
Have you ever seen a musician named KODAC HARRISON? Lives in Decatur. Great guy. I really miss Atlanta.

The 1500 just has it all over the 1800 in looks! You can always recognize the 1500, but every 1800 looks exactly like every other 1800, regardless of what goodies are put on it. The 15 is just a better looking bike!

You know Twopeanunts, I have an 80' 1100 that I've had since 1989. I've put almost 130,000 on it, and I love it like it's one of my own kids...heck, it practically IS one of my kids.

I stole an '84 1200 Aspy from a Harley guy last year, and after just riding it the 75 miles home, I could honestly say that if I'd ridden a 1200 before I bought the 1100, I'd have never bought the 1100.

Don't get me wrong here. I love the classic, old-school styling of the 1100. Years of riding it have made me so used to it's ways that it's almost an extension of my butt. I can put that bike through places that most people would look at and say "No way he went through there!" without even flinching.

However, the 1200 is a bit longer (longer wheelbase = smoother ride), has a better braking and suspension system, is a few lbs heavier, would leave my 1100 in the dust any day, runs about 1500 rpm lower at highway speed than my 1100, gets 13mpg more than my 1100...and is somehow so much lighter on it's feet than my 1100 that it took me a week to be able to ride the thing in a steady, straight line because movements that I'd been making on the 1100 for years (like regripping the throttle, or shrugging my shoulders to get my vest situated where I like it to ride) that caused no reaction at all on my 1100 caused the 1200 to actually move. The bike is almost scary nimble.

Boards can be removed, and the pegs are more comfortable in my opinion.

I would almost bet that once you ride a properly running 1200, you won't want an 1100 any more.

What I'm seeing is an '81 Interstate

Seat looks like a JC Whitney Saddleman knock-off.

Rotor covers actually look like highly modified 1500 rotor covers. Not a bad thing, just not something I've seen done on an 1100. I know it can be done on a 1200 though.

Only thing I see on the 2nd one I don't particularly like is the drivers' floorboards. But when you wear a size 15 motorcycle boot, floorboards on a Goldwing = foot cookers. :D

Looks like a touch of rust on the weld under the passenger floorboard on the right side. Nothing unusual in that. Happens there on all of the 1100's.

Looks like a tall windscreen. I personally would change that, but you may like it.

I personally prefer the Hondaline fairing to the Vetter. Better wind protection, and where the Hondaline was designed to match the bags and complete the bike, the Vetter was a commercially produced, three sizes fit all fairing.

Striping on the fairing, bags, trunk, and faux tank should be double gold, but as Lit points out, it was tape under the clearcoat, and around 5-6 years ago, they all started looking like poop, so alot of guys had the clearcoat and striping removed, then reshot the clear, or just repainted the bike completely.

I'd look at 'em both and decide which one I liked the better myself. Don't let the possibility of the first one being lightly damaged and repaired put you completely off. If it was bumped into a car, or dropped enough to just damage a couple things, the frame and head weren't bent, and the person doing the repairs was as meticulous as most of us Goldwing owners are, then I wouldn't shy away from it.
if the striping is double gold why does my 83 have factory silver stripes and yes the clear coat is peeling off and looks looks like crap

If it was me and i was test riding dont take your hands off the bars as it will go in to a bad wheel wobble which might cause you to lose control

I'm going to say it's an '83 Aspencade thing you got there Brit.

The black '81 Interstates came with double gold (Fat outside of thin stripe) striping tape.

Just got back from Complete Cycles in Rome, GA (they build trikes)- LOVED THE 84 GL1200! Fit me a lot better, and this bike was a completely different ride than the shot out gl1100 I looked at yesterday. This one came from an older guy in Florida that used it to commute to work and back - traded it in to this shop for a trike - even got the title.

It was about a 160 mile trip back - took me about 2.5 hrs - most of it at 80mph on I75 through Atlanta. Filled back up when I got home - I calculated 36mpg - needle seemed to drop a lot faster at 80 and 90 than at 70. The carbs all appear to be in sync, no flat spots. The starter is slow to spin and start - but I was expecting that. The fork seals are good - rust is all light surface - total miles on it is 90,950 (now I'm back). I can't wait to watch it roll over :)

Only bad I know I want to tackle first is the rear shocks are bottoming out bad with me on it (380lb rider) when I hit pot holes or bumps - may just need air (don't even now how to check or add air yet). And the back brakes aren't very strong - they were over adjusted when I got the shop and the guy pulling it around said they were binding and it wouldn't roll right in neutral so the shop pulled the rear wheel off readjusted the back brakes but they over did the adjustment and their too loose - so I'll need to figure out how to adjust that.

I'd ride it anywhere right now in a pinch, but if I get a few of these things sorted out I think I can start using this as a daily driver for my long commute to Atlanta for work and back fairly soon. This is exactly what I looking for! I'm thrilled. I'll post some pics later after I get through doing some more riding today!

Congratulations! You'll love that 1200 once you get all the toys figured out.

On your rear shocks...

On the left fairing lower, are there 3 big buttons, rocker type switch nearest your knee, 2 buttons next to it? I'm assuming you also have the digital dash.

If the answer is yes, then here's what you do.

While sitting still, at idle, press and hold the bottom outside button. On the engine temp gauge, it will change and show you rear shock air pressure.

While holding the bottom button, press the rocker up to add air, down to release air until the rear suspension is where you want it.

The top button is for the front shocks.

On the brakes...

The rear brakes, and the right front brake caliper should be coupled. It takes a little getting used to when you first start riding with it, but once you get used to it, you'll love it.

I can't think of any way to "adjust" the brakes. Only to bleed them. I wonder if the shop guys are telling you "adjusted" when what they really need to do is polish the caliper piston so that it'll slide smooth? Or perhaps the master cylinder is needing a little cleaning, maybe the return port is a little clogged and not allowing the caliper to completely release as it should?

You may bump into a few little nitty issues along the way, you can expect some of this with a 26 year old bike. Don't let them discourage you. We're all here, and there's even a few of us who have experienced whatever little nit you might run into, and will be willing to step you through nit removal one step at a time if need be. ;)

Now...go burn a set of tires off that thing!

Pay?? Personal question there, the man's happy, he gave what it is worth to him.

And I'm happy with that one.

like my bike I just got from Fred in Florida.... we hemhawed backards and forwards, and we both gave  in some and both of us are as happy as can be...

Fred has gone out of his way to get the bike prepared for a 4,000 mile trip home, new tires, Moly 60 on the drive line splines, new filter and oil change, and on and on.

Fred is one alright guy in my books  :readit:

picasso: yeah - I'm a big guy - that's why I bought a fatboy lol -- this was the GL1200 listed here on craigslist:  http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/mcy/1623234365.html Gave him $1800 for it.

Hmm... I don't this this one (84 Interstate w/ no digital dash) has a built in air compressor? Radio was definitely removed and replaced with CB at one time (now its removed, but antenna and wiring still in place). Left fairing lower has no buttons on it - looks like panel might have been replaced with a blank. The right fairing lower has two red flip switches on it - haven't figured out what they do yet - seller said he thought they were for some fog lights that were rusty they removed.

Don't know what they did when they "adjusted" the back brakes - but they went from being too tight where they would slow the bike down just rolling on the clutch and pressing the back brake down all the way could lock the back wheel to where now when I clutch and press the back brake pedal all the way down they just barely slow the bike down any. Front brakes are working good enough to stop safely though - and still using the back too so I stay in the habit until I figure it out.

First, glad you got what you wanted.  Also glad you took my advice on the 1200!!

Like Mike said, the brakes are hydraulic and don't adjust.  They might have moved the pedal on the shaft.  A move of one tooth can feel like a big change.  The linked brakes are kinda uncooperative to bleed but not impossible.

Behind the right side cover there will be an air connection.  There is no volume to speak of so regulate the pressure before you connect to the bike on you'll blow the shock.  If the fronts are air adjustable, you'll see an air fitting by the top of the forks.  Even more important to be carefull as these also take very low air pressure.  Best to use a hand pump.

Check tire pressure.  Should be like 39-41 front, 40-43 rear for you.

You will have a hardtime finding the original radio blank off plates.  You can still find an original Panasonic radio.  You can also still buy the adapter plate to use a common auto radio.  New speakers and replacement speaker grills for the fairing are easy to find.

Pull the left side cover off and look at the battery and connections.  Also check the starter connections.  Search here for "STATOR" but look toward the forward side of the battery and there are three yellow wires that connect the stator to the bike's harness.  The factory connection is a plastic plug.  This plug is prone to corrosion causing starting and charging issues.  This connection needs to be cleaned and packed with dielectric grease or better yet cut out completely and hard wired.

To the rear of the battery the factory main fuse (often called the dogbone) looks like the inside of a regular Buss glass fuse only bigger and no glass.  Good news is it's attached at both ends by screws so most people unscrew it and wire in a regular fuse holder.  There are more extensive solutions to both of these described elsewhere on this site.

Check the rubber grommets before reinstalling the side covers.  You don't want these to fall off as replacements can be expensive.  Most guys will attach a lanyard to the covers.  Again search this site and find examples.

As said earlier, timing belts are a good risk mitigator.

More to follow.

Apologies to our Irish host but there's another nice web page exclusive to GL1200s.  Nice Canadian friends.

Oh yeah.  When I had my two 1200s, the old gas mileage would take a nose dive if I got over 70.  You'll need to make your choice of which is more important.  But snapping out and passing will make you grin.

By the way, for what it's worth, I agree that you got a deal.

Here's a pic of my previously owned 87 Interstate.

I wasn't impressed with that first bike. When I see one with mismatched parts like the wrong fairing in this case I wonder what else was done to it. If you know a guy's good it's not necessarily bad thing but with an unknown swapping parts around you never know what potentially nasty surprises are waiting to pop up. I wouldn't have touched the first bike for that reason.
The 1200 is definitely an improvement over the 1100 though they are great bikes too but there were some significant improvements in the 1200. You'll find things that need to be done to it but once you've done whatever it needs to correct for the years of neglect it's experienced you'll have a very fine highway bike on your hands. Smooth, plenty of power and extremely reliable. That's a Goldwing!
