So I got bit by the wing bug (in no short fault due to reading this forum for the past week or so).   I currently ride an 07 fatboy, and while I like it and it looks good and all, it sucks over heating on my commute.  I'm doing 140 miles round trip daily, mostly interstates, right into the stop and go heart of Atlanta and back to the country - I prefer a bike over a cage because I use the HOV lane and shave ~45mins off my trip - but I still get a good bit of stop and go in the city and my current air cooled vtwin gets hot enough to shut off sometimes (and cooks my boys).  And honestly - it's just not that comfortable to sit on for 3-4 hrs a day.  I'm thinking a wing would make a lot more sense... but I don't want to drop a lot of money on one right now until I get the @!#$ harley paid off...  (which will probably become my wife's bike, I'm not letting it go, I really do like it for rallys and country cruising)

Anyway - shopping wings - willing to put some time and labor and parts money into one - but want to get something I can use out of the gate.  Found the following bike about an hour away from, owner doesn't know much about it other than what's in the ad.  I'm going to look at it this Saturday - and if it rides good enough where I feel safe riding it the hour back home I want it (i.e. cranks, runs smooth, brakes seem to work, etc..)

Here's what the ad said:
"1982 Honda Goldwing, 40,800 miles, Runs and drives excellent, Fully dressed, Custom Black Metallic Paint.   Come buy it and ride it home. Cash sale only.  $1300 FIRM"

What can you tell me from these pics?  i.e. It looks like an 82 Interstate with a Vetter fairing and lowers, and I think I see floor boards (I want) and highway pegs (I want) and the exhaust looks aftermarket?  Do you think this would me a good starter wing / why  / why not?   Its down to this and  2 others (an 84 interstate for 1800, and and 81 interstate for 1500)... but I think I'm pretty much sold on this GL1100 since its cheaper and half the mileage...

Thanks!
-Scott

Hey twopeanuts I have a 1500 and love it. I would see how long the guy owned it and if he had any maintenance records on the bike. The price looks good if its been maintained. You have to figure timing belts all fluids battery brakes and filters. If you could do this all yourself and it's running well now I think you could get your money back on it. I'm sure other 1100 riders will be along to share their opinions. Good luck with the search and I like the color of your fatboy in your avatar.:waving:

Looks to be stock exhaust with extensions on them.....For $1300.00 it makes me want to jump on it, but one more Wing and I'll be sleeping in the garage with them...We have one member, Rudy that lives not too far from you might want to see if he could meet you there and advise you on it....That is one nice looking Wing.....I'll contact him and see if he is willing to help you.....I also noticed that on the light bars there are strip lights...These were sold by JCWhitney, now they are obsolete.??? But they do sell LED strip lights if these don't work....Crap one more edit...Who ever owns it looks like they cut the windshield down, so if you are wanting to keep the bugs off might want to consider buying a regular windshield.....Several companies sell them including Vetter.....Not expensive at all...

Good looking from the pics. check for leaks, fork seals. Check the fluid in the brake master cylinder. Does he have maintenance records?
Personally I don't like the floor boards on the old wings, cuts down the lean angle too much to me.

That bike here in Canada will sell for around $3500 fairly quickly! I own an 1100 Aspy & an 88 Electra Glide. the Aspy will out power my Harley with no problem & get up to highway speed in half the time. You can run them at 80 mph all day long. average fuel mileage is mid 40's. If it's running well I would dive on it!
the handling is different but after around 1 week on that bike, you will be scraping the floor boards in the twisties!

I had my 1100 in Phoenix for one summer and it could idle in rush hour traffic forever and not overheat. You will feel heat off the engine, but that's motorcycling. If the 1100 you are looking at runs decently and you are handy, it looks like a fair deal.

That sounds like a great buy. It has many more good miles in it with little expense. My 1100 just rolled over 100,000 miles. If it's a good runner you really can't go wrong for that money.

Hey nuts, I'll be happy to look at it with you if you wish.
What part of the 'country' around ATL are you in?

I'm in Woodstock.

Rudy: From Woodstock it would be about a 3hr trek one way - couldn't ask you to do that in this weather we've been having. I live in Forsyth, GA now (about 2hrs south of Woodstock) and the seller in Butler, GA (about another hour south of me)... but Thanks!

I'd find out if it towed a trailer also since I see a hitch on it. Could be just for looks though since it has all that other bling on it.

Nice looking ride for the bucks. I paid 1100 for my 81 when I got it a few years ago, didn't have nearly all the bling on it.

Welcome to the forum!!:waving:

And, since it was apparently an Interstate, the fairing was changed for a reason. I'm guessing drop damage.

The exhaust look like MAC or Jardine, not stock.

:waving:Welcome and Hello . Thats a nice looking bike . Nothing like black and chrome for a bike . The vetter though not stock is a nice fairing and the lowers are rare finds. I think for the looks of the pictures the price is sure fair .

I'll add that it likley wont overheat and shut down with you , though it will warm up in stop n go traffic . When the temp rises and the thermostat turns on the fan that warmed up air will flow back towards your legs . Here in Fl I added a toggle switch into the fan circuit so I could  turn the fan on earlier and leave it on in stop n go driving .

Good luck with your trip to check this sweet bike out .

There has been a lot of work done to that motorcycle. That always raises a flag with me.

I would look for things like stripped out screw heads and rounded off bolt heads. Boths signs that a hack did the work on it. Another thing I would do is pull the left side cover off and look at the wiring to see if it has been chopped up.

Also like Bagmaster said: check for signs that it has towed a trailer, Scuffed ball, trailer lights wiring, ect.

From the pics, it looks pretty nice. Like some PO just went nuts with the JC Whitney catalog.

Good luck
