NJ requires you to pay for a learners permit and take a written test, after passing the written test, your learners permit is now valid. With that you are allowed to ride your bike as long as another rider who has a motorcycle is riding with you, after that you can take the driving test which involves stopping, starting,a figure 8 without putting your feet down and a slow speed maneuver with out putting your feet down, after passing all of that you get the pleasure of trying to avoid getting run over by NJ's crazy drivers

When I  took mine here in Florida it was a written test that had some very confusing questions and that gave you a learners permit. It was good for 90 days and could be renewed a couple times until you either

1; passed an approved motorcycle safety course that cost anywhere from $250 to $350 depending on where you took it.

or

2; Passed the skills test the Highway Patrol gave in their parking lot.

I chose the second being it was $15.00.

The guy said I probably couldn't do it on a wing. It did take two attempts.

Now, you must take a approved motorcycle course.

As I understand it here, if you are caught driving a bike without an "M/C ENDORSEMENT" you are looked at as driving with no license, not just driving a bike with a car license. You get cuffed and stuffed.

I also question the intellegence of allowing someone to go take a course which uses 250's for the road riding and then allowing a new biker to go out and buy the high performance bikes you can for very little money.

I question the intellect of making a course theres no way a wing is going to go through as a skills test . I never had to do the ride test but iv seen it set up . Here in Mi. an experienced rider would fail on a full size bike . An " expert " rider would be needed to do it on a wing .

This is the reason you see small bikes used to run the course they have . Typical case of no logic being used in the testing requirments . If sure the course is different from state to state .

I kept the endorsement for years until one year the DMV in Juneau accidently omitted it in a renewal. I didn't care, didn't have a bike a the time. Well I should have, I went back to owning a bike and had to jump through all the hoops. I don't driver commercially any more but learned my lesson, I'll keep that CDL just in case.
Exavid we must be kinfolks bud....I did the same thing...when I sold my Last Goldwing back in 98 i let the M Endorsement go since I didn't PLAN on buying another....in 1999 I hung my Keys to the Big Truck after a Heart-Attack in Dec. 98, so I dropped My CDL w/Haz-Mat since I didn't PLAN on Driving Trucks anymore. I woke up one day in 2006 around August with Motorcycle Fever so I went out and purchased an 07 Honda Shadow 1100...No Motorcycle Endorsement, now I would have to re-license for the Motorcycle, and wouldn't you know I would wait 3 years till Texas Required the BRC for 200.00 before I done so, I just completed the Course, and got my endorsement, I figured my LUCK was running Out.....so I am Legal Again to Ride, then In September 06 I got Truck Fever, guess what, I needed my CDL Again...Same Ol Stuff, had to go back take ALL of the Written Tests and ALSO take the Driving Test Also....it felt Silly at 46 yrs old with over a million miles in Americas Highways taken a silly Driving Test...lol. I have learned my lesson now, I retired my Keys again Last April after the 4th Heart attack in Nov. 08 but NO MATTER....I gonna KEPP my DAMN CDL w/Hazmat.......and the Moral of this Story is ALWAYS Keep your Endorsements...And NEVER...Say NEVER....

The course in South Carolina is pretty tuff for a big 1800.  I failed it the first time. I knocked over a cone. :whip::whip:  To get through it takes some practice.

I have rode a bike for years, since age 17 and I could not pass it.   Took me a couple days of practice, with the 1800 you are lock to lock and have to scoot your butt over and push the bike down in the turn to get it around those end cones.

Ya can do it, but best to go rent a small one from a pawn shop or something and go breeze through it  and be done with the deal.

I had to educate the Trooper too, he wanted me to lock the rear wheel.  I told him no can do with this one, I have ABS brakes, I can make it chirp a bit but it is not gonna lock up. (the part where they want you to do an emergency stop , lock the rear an let off just as it locks) They are pretty fussy about that.

I added the M endorsement to my licenses in the late 60s.
Highway patrolman followed me around a 3 block area on a little Honda 160 twin, honking once for me to do a right hand turn and twice for left, it took every bit of 5 minutes.
I have been careful not to let the DMV drop it when renewing even in the years I had no bike. I did not want to do a redo...Just a few weeks ago when renewing my license again I made sure to say I wanted to keep my Motorcycle  e. on there too.:)

Amsoiler,I pity you having to retake the CDL road test,a friend of mine dropped his CDL after 7 years and when he went back to take (realizing he made a mistake dropping his CDL)the test,he failed, the road tester kept hollering at him  to "USE THE CLUTCH WHEN YOU SHIFT".Plus when he took the road test he was using my truck (285"wheelbase)and had never driven a truck that big..so with a 53'trailer he hit some cones. He retook it in a small truck and trailer and passed..lol

I have to retake my Haz-Mat after dropping it 4 years ago,I am hooking up with a local company, selling my big truck and getting a smaller one(daycab)so I can be home to go riding on the weekends....unless I could put a rack on the back of my truck and take my Wing with me...

Yeah I remember the trooper following me around blowing his horn for me to make my right and left turns...Both on that Cushman and my Suzuki....One of best buddies, Sonny was born with no left arm just below his elbow, his mother had taken some drug that we know now caused birth defects....Any how Sonny,me and a few other guys had paper routes that we threw off of bicycles....Then we all started getting Cushmans to throw our papers....Sonny talked his mother into letting him have  scooter...The Cushman dealer installed an extension on the left handle bar to where Sonny could stick his left nub into it and control that Cushman...Being hard headed Sonny didn't go get his license, yup he got pulled over and got a ticket....So now he had to go gt his licenses.... We took him and his scooter and practiced that route until he could do it blindfolded....

Day of the test Sonny passed the written part with flying colors....Now he he nervous a cat on a hot tin roof looking for a shady spot when that trooper calls his name....Sonny did great!!!! That is until it came to his last left turn..The trooper blowed his horn signaling for Sonny to make that final turn....Sonny made this sharp let turn 1/2 block from the corner.....Right smack onto this driveway where the home owners were setting in their lawn chairs.....Needless to say Sonny failed that day....It took two more tries before he finally passed....Sonny rode that Cushman till he got his first car.....But every time any one mentions taking a driving test I think of Sonny and the look on those peoples faces when Sonny took that left turn into their driveway....:cheeky1::cheeky1:......

Sonny left this earth in 1998 from a heart attack...RIP Sonny.....

Claude....

Ya know it's Interesting you mention your friend Sonny Died of a Heart Attack in 1998, I had my 1st heart Attack Dec. 26,1998....to me Sonny had Completed his Job on Earth...as for me, my Job isn't done yet, I still have something left to do in God's name I suppose, I have had 4 Heart Attacks all total, and some days I still womder what else it is I need to do....

I remember taking my MC Tests Twice and yup the officer havin your friend honk the horn for Instructions on the Riding Test. When I sold my last Wing back in 1995 I let my MS Endorsement drop, I purchased a Honda Shadow 1100 in August of 06' and watched the New Law for getting your MC Endorsement go right by me last year....That made me feel really dumb and 2 weeeks ago I finally took the BRC (Basic Rider Course) for $200.00 and now I am Legal again. The Law bothers me in that I wonder how many people may now not be able to afford to License due to the fact is costs over $215.00 to get a MC Endorsement.....but on the Bright Side of it, Look How Many NEW Businesses It will Create.....hmmmm.....

I wonder if there is any different in accident rates between the states/provinces that have very restrictive licence requirements and those that don't.

I'd be willing to look at that.....I hear there is State and Maybe Federal Money for those places. The guy who trained us was saying that Suzuki Furnished those cycles for our class....Imagine That...Suzuki's at a Harley Davison Dealership...Cracked me up....
