I own the official manuals for LTD, 1200's, 1500, and thru 2008 1800's.  So, this hasn't been an issue for me.  But, I didn't know that Helm offered anything for 1000, and 1100's.

I think what everyone seems to be missing here is that Mother Honda does still make the manuals available for SALE, if you know where to find the authorized re-printer of the manuals.

Therefore, the posting of free copies on Goldwingdocs.com, as well as the downloading and storage of those free copies, constitutes copyright infringement, and also theft.

Section 107 of the fair use doctrine as it applies to free use in educational settings, allows an accredited school to, instead of purchasing 30-50 new books per class, have the lee-way to make excerpted copies from their primary book, and distribute them as their classroom curriculum, while encouraging students to purchase their own books.

It also covers the borrowing of said books from a genuine, recognized library.

Goldwingdocs.com does not fall under either of those descriptions.

Just because you CAN post something to the internet, and just because you CAN download it for free instead of needing to purchase it like everyone else, does not make it right on either end.

As annoyed by the sudden loss of your easily stolen manuals as you all may be, I haven't noticed anywhere in Honda's business model where they just give away their stuff to make a few people happy. That would be ludicrous.

I also am pretty sure, based upon the letter from a Honda representative, that this use falls under the terms of "Unauthorized reproduction of these materials".

GSMac, you should be thankful that they sent you a simple cease and desist letter, instead of prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law as they are certainly entitled to do.

As a side-note, I suspect that now that Honda has contacted you, it won't be too long before you hear from Haynes and Clymer as well.

I for one think that if goldwingdocks are made to take the manuals off the site then mother honda should be made to keep making all the parts for all years of goldwings

I don't like the inference of anyone saying I "easily" stole anything. I downloaded the manuals in good faith. I never considered "easily" stealing anything. "Easily stolen"<<<< Very bad choice of words.

ALL the GL manuals are for sale (reprints of course) at http://www.helminc.com which pays MotherHonda to be an authorized reprinter.:readit:

I did not know that these manuals were still available. :?

I didn't see the owner's manual for my 1974 CB550 on helminc.com
Honda did the same thing for reproduction decals. You couldn't buy them from Honda, so a site doing reproduction decals started selling some by custom order. Honda sent them the same style of cease and desist letter.

Perhaps that is the case and I am guilty of copyright infringement. I'll gladly return to AHMC their rightful property if, and when, they demand its return. Never knew what it felt like to be a thief before today!!!

On a lighter note, I think I just hit 1000 posts!!

I didn't know they had them available either....never looked for them before but I remembered the site when reading the posts (had a buddy tell me about it a few years ago when I was bringing the Rebel back to life) and I decided to check it out.

The next step after a letter complaining about copyright infringement is usually to contact the hosting company, who would then more than likely pull the whole site in order to cover themselves.
I can't see any publisher or copyright owner giving permission to reproduce/distribute their paid manuals for free, and the letter to goldwingdocs had to be expected eventually.

MDK we are not trying to make Honda give away their property for free. We want support for items that are still running. My 79 for instance. I can not find an owners manual, a repair manual, or many parts. I have had to learn how to fix my bike without the help of Honda. If Honda wants to sell the property, Honda needs to make it available. If i can make a part that Honda no longer makes, am I stealing their property? I think NOT.

The last I'm going to say on this subject is this:

30,000 lawsuits have been brought against people who committed copyright infringement simply by downloading music through services such as Napster, Kazza, Limewire, bit torrents, etc.

Those suits were filed under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1989.  Approximately 8,000 of those suits were filed outside of U.S. territory in countries that participate in the Act (Canada, all of Europe, about 1/4 of Asia, a few select countries in South America and on the African Continent, and others).

Of those 30,000 suits filed, all but one was settled out of court, and the result of the one settled in court can be found here:

Woman fined $1.92 Million in Music Downloading Suit

$800,000 per song.

Now, I know that you all are saying "That's music downloading", and you're correct in that.  However, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act applies to ALL copyrighted material that has been digitized and made available through the use of the Internet.

I'm trying to look out for EVERYONE'S best interest here, and advise that you ALL need to use caution when deciding whether or not, and how, to approach Honda about this because in a case where copyrights have been infringed upon, the person who made them available is not the only person who can be fined.

I called the number and asked if the manuals were still available, I was put on hold while the guy looked for me to see if they had what I was looking for. He came back and told me to to go the website that Snorebaby gave. I asked if that was the only source and was told that the site was licensed to sell the manuals.

I didn't need to go any further than that. If you don't think they have the right to sue over it, create a problem for them and see what happens.

As long as the books are copyright protected, they have the means and legal ease to do something about online offered copies.

Do I like that, of course not, but they are obligated to their distributor to prevent the sale or copy being distributed by someone that is not licensed to do so.

I think you can say this goes back to a post here while back about a particular website bashing. They called someone out for what they said and put on here that they knew of the website having copyrighted material on it to be downloaded for free. Doesn't take a genius to figure out they spilled the beans on the site to cause trouble for it. I think they are going after someone like the website went after them!

Not being a computer geek, my question is once you've downloaded the material how can they tell if you've dumped it or not ?? Will this be on the honor system ?? Would Honda spend the money to make a few 100 test cases to scare all others ??
