So I am looking at luggage racks for the back of my GL1800 and I am wondering how much weight can a person realistcally can place on those 4 bolts/washers going through the trunk without damaging either the truck or the hinges?

Any advice out there? :?:?

I have the Kuryakyn on mine.  I did the installation and added extra larger washers to the inside to help stop the possible cracking of the cover.

Weight..... The paperwork says 2 pounds...2pounds is the equivalent of 2 loaves of bread.  I think they said that because of the liability issues.  I have safely put about 15 pounds on mine (Small dog and carrier) and traveled from Tacoma to Grand Rapids and back.

You will want to do the trunk lid fix...  Trunk lid fix  and you probably should get some of those slick pads for the rubbing points to prevent the wear down of the contact points of your trunk.  You can also adjust the latch loops so the trunk lid does not shut down as far.

I chose the Kury because of the flat billet look instead of the round pipe look.

Whatever you choose, use it and enjoy, just remember that you may end up with trunk lid cracking and rubbing.  It will also be harder to clean under, but it sure looks good!!

Ideally  ...  no more than 10lbs   ....  but I regularly run 15-20lbs for the past 2 years/45,000mi on my 1500, with no problems   ....   but  .... I use the risers to spread the load and have mounted a couple of extra large rubber washers   ....  YMMV

excuse the dust  ... the bike was sitting all winter when this shot was taken  :(  ....

on the underside of the lid ....

This was probably the heaviest load I've carried on it, with the rear tire being on there for the last 100+ miles of a 8,500+ mi tour. The trunk rack bag and it's contents weighed in at over 30lbs. The tire was another good 10lbs

I have been careful not to open/close the trunk using the rack, or to let it drop, when loaded, while closing. I am in the process of reinforcing the underside of the trunk, using some ABS and ABS cement, just to improve the 'rigidity' of the lid.

Here's some imformative reading/ideas on the subject - http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=83565&forum_id=1&jump_to=899187#p899187

You can also reinforce the trunk lid first with some extra ABS plastic pieces glued to the inside of the trunk lid with ABS pipe dope.  Others have done this.  Here's one that GSMacLean did:

http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/forum1/80801.html

There's a link in his first post that takes you to his installation procedure with picutures.

I'm sure that there are others as well.  Just search the site and you will find them.

Really makes for a strong installation, and no way you will crack the trunk lid once this has been done.

I think the risers help a lot also, they spread out the weight distribution well and you have more room to clean underneath. I usually use the rack for a bulky item like a jacket or two. Fold them in on themselves then use a six point bungee as an idea.

When you are loaded they really come in handy

The 1500 lid seems to be much sturdier than the 1800.
This may be simply because the 1500 lid is flatter than the 1800!
Many of the cracks on 1800's, my opinion only is caused, in part by the mounting surfaces on the lid for attachment of a rack not being a flat plane. This equates to making the manufacturing of a rack difficult to get the mounting legs the exact angles and lengths needed to match the lid perfectly.
When the rack is mounted it places the lid in a stressed condition and makes it very susceptible to cracking.
Proof of this, if you want to, is to loosen you rack and see how much it "rocks" instead of sitting perfectly on it's mounting legs.

The Kury rack on mine set perfectly flat even without the bolts in place.  I do however like the idea of the risers.  I'll have to see about getting a set!

I do not use a luggage rack .  But have installed a few, seen a few cracked trunk lids.

Many situations with the whole deal.  From weight of the goods hauled on the rack , to wind resistance and buffeting against the load, to a service tech using the rack as a handle as he and another push the bike unto a lift.

Also the hinges are not real strong, the trunk lid does love to walk around and wear into itself.

So If I were to put one on my bike, I would first run the tube fix into the weather seal trunk grommet, and install sections of velcro over each one of the trunks raised lid bumpers.  I have done that anyway, just normal use with no rack the trunk lid will eat into itself with time.  So that is good to do with or without a rack.

The racks we install here, now we use two layers of fiberglass cloth and resin under the trunk lid about 4 inches round.  Layer that onto the underside and once it is set it provides a really strong and flexible support that distributes the load of the rack over the area of the lid.  Then use large fender washers like the photos shown in Dusty's installation.

I have seen some really heavy stuff and those large pack bags stuffed to the brim and lashed up on the racks and not even a hairline crack .

Take a bit of time once you have the holes located and drilled, and layer a couple layers of glass cloth to the underside of the lid, then drill the holes out again, use large fender washers and rubber pads top and bottom and it will most likely never crack.

The two pound load limit is a joke.....just wind force with a small teddy bear with sunshades will exceed that.

I have always wished the trunk lid would open to one side. Put something in the passenger seat and you have to move it to get the trunk open or push it open anyway and put stress on the hinges.

Also keep an eye on the wire harness that is real close to the hinges, If you see it wearing take the wire clips off and wrap it with a layer or two of electrical tape. Then you are ahead of the hunt for the wire trick when the trunk lights will not work.

I have the risers with star washers under and almost permanently have a kuryakyn rack bag and on longer journeys strap a tank bag on top also.

i take it off once a year to check for damage no cracking but star washers digging in a little, I did the fix to the seal as soon as i got the bike using fuel hose and i am sure this has helped more than anything else, weight has been over 10 kilos but not reccomended by manufacturer bike is top heavy

Two pounds? 2 pounds? 2 lbs? What?

Well I guess I didn't read the fine print. I've put up to 20 lbs on all four of my Goldwings. I've had with no issues. ??
