Okay, without calling anyone vile names, some PO decided that the back side of the bracket needed to be filleted out by grinding 2/3rds of the metal out of it.

I had not taken notice of this fact, because in honest truth, I have just been riding :action:

But today, I learned that all is not well when I stood up on the highway pegs and leaned backwards real hard to stretch my leg muscles.

Thunk!  I'm laying against the pillion's backrest???

Here is what I need, the bracket between the backrest and the frame that holds it.

Markland brand?

That's where the problem lies.  Just wondering if someone has one in their odds 'n ends box?

gladly pay for it being shipped to me at one of my stops, and reimburse you for what's it worth too :readit:

Probably not what you want to hear-but I'd use this opportunity to ditch that one and get a Utopia;)

I would agree with that ,and also John ,there are 3 different manufaturers of those type and they all look the same but that bracket is slightly different on each one , I ran into the same problem a few years back and I could not find the manufacturers name on the backrest anywhere and never actually got the correct one.. Anyone have the brackets that mount to the bike? PO cut the ends off mine. Now backrest bracket just slides in, no nut to tighten it down.

AZgl1500, looks like that piece can be removed. You may check to see if a welding shop can weld that back up. It looks like it may be aluminum and the welding shop may have a piece of steel that would work better.

dwsoanr, how about a hose clamp on the backrest piece where it slides into the bracket used as a stop to keep it from going to far in? Might get you in business until you can find replacement brackets.

^ agreed.

I would think that a decent steel shop could create a functional replacement for not too many $$, and have it be steel to boot... Just take the pieces in and see...

Good idea guys, consider that one of the projects for today or tomorrow.

I will just have a steel bar made up to take its' place. end of broken back braces...

This one is cast aluminum, pot metal in the vernacular.

Looks just like my Markland. Welding should fix it with maybe and added steel
support of some kind.
Sounds like you are having a great time!

I agree that it looks like the Markland that I used to have.

but this animal does not have a single mark on it to claim who made it

I think that I will just have a piece of flat steel strap cut to size and drill the two holes for the bolts to go through.

If it looks like a Markland, and it has no marks on it, then it's most likely a Saber.

Call Utopia and order a decent back rest. It's the only way to go.

Hey John, A piece of spring steel would be perfect. A piece of slightly curved spring steel, with a couple of steel tubes welded nicely on each end for the bolts and painted black would last forever. Just a thought. In fact, I could MAKE you one and send it ahead of you, if I had the  dimensions  of the broken one. I can weld, but I grind em pretty even better!;) And someone on here is a machinist with a CNC. I saw his fork brace he made here. If I can help, it wouldn't take much to put one together.   jimsjinx

John, mine is a Markland, and looks as I can see it a bit different. Mine has a curved portion at the bottom that cradles into the pipe to act as a stop. And it says it in big letters what it is. Go with the piece of steel for now, it can be done anywhere till you get some time. Just make sure it is in the right position for your back. You don't want problems there.

OK, I have to go check on your other thread now.  ;)

Sounds like a good stop gap while you wait for that new Utopia! I've had the Markland back rest and it doesn't hold a candle to the Utopia. Nno I don't work for them either some things are just better. Utopia back rest, Frogg Toggs, Odyssey battery, Kisan modulator, those are some better things.

I have a complete backrest and hardware by Hopnel. I think they actually just made the pad and pouch. Anyway $100 + shipping. It's slightly grey and black.

Hey!

Long time no hear my friends.  Glad to see you in print for a change, you ought to be here in the states, so we could travel again.

On the other hand, maybe I can train the ole steed to swim and come down your way. :action:
