In the middle of a really great trip and my trusty Zumo 550 died.
Shut the bike down and Zumo asks to keep running on its battery or to shut itself off. I pushed the shut down pad area on the screen.

About an hour later, the bike started up but Zumo did not. Screen is dead.
Pulled the Zumo off it's mount and it would not start on its own battery either.

I am requesting a RMA for service work and hope for the best. These units are very expensive, even today, so it's worth looking into. This will be the second unit as the first lost one of the tiny gold contact pads two years ago and replaced for nothing. Hope it will be a quick exchange.

In the mean time I have that clunker that came with the bike. No, I have not kept up with the annual program updates.
If I had, I could have purchased a new Zumo 550.
It's almost 5 years old.

I will keep you informed as to the complete service issue.
If any of you have issues with this unit please share.

This unit is my main instrument for direction, speed & distance (real), fuel stops and much more. (No TUNES for the rest of the trip).

I'm on the road again on Sunday from MI. through Ont, into New England and Maine and then down the eastern sea board to Sarasota FL. (with no complaints mind you)

I will miss the Zumo but have much to look forward to in checking the boxes before I check out. :cheeky1::cheeky1:

Thanks for the tips. The pins looked OK but in the morning I will double check. The other work in a few minutes.

Hi Bagmaster,
I may deviate off I-95 to Charleston, time allowing as I have never been there and cut back to 95 again. The time envelope has been pushed pretty hard this trip, but really worth it. (The bank account needs to be recharged). I have renewed many old friends and met many new as well, plus checking some boxes.

I noticed that Jonesville is north of my intended path, you live in some of the finest country. When I plan for NC in the spring or early summer, I will PM you as it would not be that far from Highlands for a meet up.

Did not find a reset button, but did try the start and screen button suggestion. Still a dead screen. Hopefully it's a correctable pin.

From Garmin's FAQ's, and I know NaturalyGW had this same issue and had to remove the battery to reset it.

To troubleshoot issues with the zumo powering on:
  1. Connect the zumo to a power source such as the USB cable and your computer.
  2. Hold the zoom (+) and ON buttons for five seconds. This typically restores power to the zumo.
  3. If this does not restore power, remove the battery for five seconds and reinstall it to reset the zumo.
  4. Ensure that your zumo has the latest software updates.

I'm surprised to hear of the problems with a portable GPS. My Magellan 2200T has been dropped a few times, gotten soaked riding in the rain and has withstood high temps sitting out in the sun and is still going strong. I think it's almost four years old now even so the internal battery will still carry it for 6-8 hours on a charge. When this one gives up the ghost I'll have to get another portable ASAP the thing is just too handy. I was quite surprised how much more information the portables will give compared to the built in one in our car and on Goldwings.

Garmin has some glitchy software I've found.  I had to do hard resets on both of my Quest and my Quest II a couple of times before they failed to find satellites at all, which is apparently a hardware problem.  So far my old Street Pilot 2720 has been flawless.  My nuvi 1250 in my cage has been as well.

I have on the odd occasion had the exact same problem. I phoned the shop where I bought the Zumo from and they said about the "trick" of resetting it by pressing the + button at the same time as the on/off button.

So far this has always brought the Zumo back on no problem.

It has not been a persistant problem, just once in a blue moon I turn it off and it won't then come back on next time.

I hope this re set works for you Longboater. :byebye:

My Garmin 2730 on occasion with the OEM software that was in it, would glitch if it was ON before you started the engine. The brief power OFF cycle while starting would come back to the same screen it had before, but the software would suddenly start giving the weirdest directions.

Totally lost and confused. Powering it OFF for a couple of minutes would fix it.

But, yesterday, I was very surprised to notice that after updating it a while back, it did not get lost even though it went through several reset cycles.

All really great ideas (Steve you are worth your weight) I did them all and was about to paw through someones tool box for the teeny tiny 2mm to remove the battery. Out of frustration I held the Power and - at the same time and it came back to life.

No, I am not throwing away the paper maps that my Michigan friend just printed off for Maine's back country.

I am forever in your collective debts. My next donation will be double for sure. (after my bank account takes a breath).

Have a great weekend, thanks to you guys I really will.

Again many thx.

I am about to head up to Port Huron, Michigan and then some, as I have been invited to a horse show.

As horses morphed into Goldwings and I truly believe this, do you think my 07 will steal the show? :cheeky1:

Having a great day, hope you all are too. :applause:

Sure glad that you got it working again.....I'm not much into all this new technology for just that reason....Momma setting on the back with our trusty Rand McNally road map served us well for many many years....Only thing I see good about these electronic devices is they can't slap you on the back of your helmet hollering "I said left stupid"......:cheeky1:......May just break down and look at buying one, then maybe that's not a good idea because I would have two female voices hollering "I said left stupid!!!!"...:?......

On my way home from Maine last week, Zumo died again while approaching the George Washington bridge in NY. While stopped in traffic, I held the power and - (my breath too) buttons simultaneously. Lit right up, thanks to you all.

In following up the Zumo issue, the folks at Garmin suggested down loading the updates again, which I did.

Testing on a trip up to NC would really be cool, don't you think? Working on it.

Glad to hear it Longboater!  Yeah I think you definitely need another trip to try out the new software.  I'm not sure NC is far enough though. ;)
