But a "good" tool comes with a warranty. the clowns that offer 24/7 tech support just look funny and say "idunno". So, when it fails, right off the shelf and the people who represent it cant fix their own design, something is wrong!
I hate vista!

That's just mean! As someone who also makes money supporting Windows systems, I also hate Vista. It's a bloated resource hog that wouldn't work with most peripherals that were more than a year old, until the first service pack. Even Microsoft is not happy with it, especially since 80+% of businesses are not upgrading from XP because there is no compelling reason to do so.

Well MickeySoft is getting out the crowbar by forcing enterprise license holders to go vista. They are not renewing the state-wide XP license starting in July so scores of government and bulk corporate license holders are getting a special 'opportunity' for supporting Bill over the years.
Another sign of an in-demand item pulling the market along.
See my sig below.

Not sure what their volume license is like, but the one we have does not force us to renew or stop using the product. If their license's are like that, MS may just find out they are losing the SA stream as well. Why pay for SA when you're not going to use the newer product? If they force the issue, I wonder if that might be enough for some companies to investigate the alternatives?
BTW, Bill is evil. He didn't get the people this dependant on MS all at once. It was a slow calculated process.

At the time I got involved, the only alternative for the desktop was MAC, and that was twice as expensive and maybe had 2% of the available software as Windoze had. Most people hadn't even heard of Linux until maybe 2 years ago, and I'm not sure more than 1/2 of the people have still heard of it. I believe the biggest reason people still use Windoze is because they don't realize there is a viable alternative that will be cheaper in the long run. As for me, Windoze is still paying the bills for me, so I'm stuck here for now. Last edited on Tue Apr 8th, 2008 10:23 pm by Jluvs2dive

I wasn't aware that when you purchased windows that it had an expiration date, or required renewing. or is that for bulk pricing, different licence?

It's apparently a volume licensing agreement thing. The volume license that my company has with MS does not have an expiration date, at least in the sense your talking about, meaning when it expires you can no longer legally use the software. Our agreement is a 3 year agreement, which gives us use of any current MS licensed software, plus licenses to use of any new versions that come out during the agreement period, (Software Assurance or SA). In our agreement we don't lose the license to use the software when the agreement expires, we just lose the rights to use new versions that come out after the agreement expires, unless we purchase a new agreement at that time. I hope this makes sense.
You don't have anything to worry about for Windows purchased in the retail market, meaning off the shelf or with a new computer. It does not expire. MS will drop support for it at some point though, meaning no more updates.

Nope, makes sense, but what do you mean by"versions"?
Like w2000 to XP to vista...I'm assuming, or the latest service packs?
It's understandable they would want more money for a brand new OS, but how can they coerce you to upgrade to their new OS you don't want?

Yes, version upgrades as you said, not service packs. Everyone that has licensed software is entitled to the service packs.
As Rudy mentioned, their coercion is apparently that they will lose the license to use the older versions, which is really against their historical licensing model. Currently and in the past, volume licensing also enabled you to use any previous version of the software, for instance if you have a slow machine that cannot run XP adequately, but you have a volume license for Windows, you were allowed to install Windows 98 instead. If what Rudy said is correct, and I have no reason to doubt him, then MS is grasping at some new straws to try to increase their revenue stream. It's likely to backfire on them though, as some of their other strong-arm tactics have. Time will tell.

At least you don't have to worry about anything you didn't already have to worry about.
Hey John you young'n there was always CPM. The original DOS/Netware.
Yes many have only begun to hear about Linux but your theory doesn't hold true.
80% of those that know about it won't try it anyway because they have become brainwashed by their captors into believing that there is only this one Bill life raft.
Including most corporate and government users as well.
One thing keeping the cash flow alive is that there are so many people involved with extorting money from the clients that no one wants the cash cow to be killed. Including all of the millions of investors who have their retirements tied up in it.
Some 'outlaws' just cherish freedom more than others and those are the people who are willing to go through the learning curve to escape the Bill o' system that they have all bought into.
And the did all buy into it. Just like the old saying goes... "No one ever got fired for buying IBM"... "No one ever got fired for buying Microsoft". And that mentality of "me first" is what has gotten us to this point.
Bill was just the drug supplier. The users of his systems are the junkies. And they are skeert to quit. Can't blame them. It's big and they are selfish sheep.
