Your ignitors are probably still good, remove from the bolt, take yhe connectors apart, spray brake cleaner in contact area blow with compressed air make and break contacts 2-3 times, before reassembly check if tar is coming from back.  If so pack rear with Dux Seal (electrical wholsaler), re-assemble.  Should be OK

Thet get too hot from dirty connectors.

Many times an intermittant ignition problem can be solved by cleaning the contact connectors of the modules.  When dirt interferes with the connection the resistance values climbs high and the overall load amps may go higher than design causing heating.  Test them after arun and if warm to the touch clean.

By the way that goes for every connector on the bike.

Except that for '82 and '83 there are actually two ignitor boxes (same place), not one as shown for the earlier GL1100..

'make / break contact' means to plug in the connector and unplug it. Along with the contact cleaner, plugging in and unplugging the connector helps to clean the contacts, similar to using a scraper on the contacts.

Hope this helps.
