Well some of you probably remember my post about my dads Walmart adventure when we were in Colorado last year >>>

http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/view_post.php?post_id=855558

after that fun and games you would think it could never happen again right??? as much chance as lightning hitting you on the head twice!!

well neither did i but it really did and it was even better than last year!

on one of the last nights Button Lady and DRod invited us over to their house for a pizza. i couldnt go because i had really a sore head after accidentally swigging the strong stuff the night before from some turkish lads staying at the tallyho motel. so my dad brought me to Walmart to buy some headache pills and a case of beer for Patty and Dennis, intending to drop me back to the Tally before he went to Patty and Dennis.
so off we went to Walmart in Hamburg and got the pills and scooped up a case of mixed buds and went to the cashier. she was about 19 and had glasses and when we reached the till she scanned the pills, looked at the beer and asked my dad if he had any ID. all of a sudden my headache dissappeared, i knew by the look in dads eyes that the game was on and i was glad i came to Walmart with him instead of staying in the Tally. >>>>>

Dad, puzzled: why do i need ID, is it because i am from Ireland?

Cashier: no sir, i need to know if you are over the age to buy alcohol.

(dad looks at her with unbelieving eyes and we swap a quick look at one another. a lady with her about 8 year old daughter are behind us in the line and more people behind them.)

Dad: Youre kidding me arent you?

Cashier: no i need to see proof of age.

Dad: how old do i have to be to buy beer, 60? (laughs from the line).

Cashier: no sir, 21.

Dad: cant you tell if i am over 21?

Cashier: well i dont know how old you are, how would i know?

Dad turns to the lady next in line and asks: do you think i look old enough to buy beer?

Lady (laughing): oh yes, i think about 43.

Dad smiles at her, says thanks for the complement and asks her daughter how old she thinks he is.

Girl, with a big smile: 50!

Dad: Well done! then he says to the cashier: can you get someone out here who know what they are doing please?

Cashier: why, dont you think i know how to do my job?

Dad (still smiling): well i think there has to be something wrong with you if by any stretch of your imagination you really think i am not over 21.

Cashier (digging the hole deeper) snaps: if you just show me ID sir i will be able to sell you the beer. dont you Irish people carry ID?

Dad (smile gone now): yes we do and i have my passport in my pocket, but on principel i wont take it out and i am not moving from here without the beer. so get someome out here with a brain please.

now there is a bit of a crowd mostly laughing their heads off, and staff are looking over to see what is going on. a cashier lady from another till comes over and asks our cashier what is wrong. our cashier tells her the story, probably she is expecting some support. but the other cashier is obviously the one with the brain, her jaw drops and she whispers: "you cant be serious, just take the mans money and wrap this up fast before you get into trouble".

our cashier does the deal with a really red face. she has a last chance to avoid looking a really complete fool but blows it by closing the till and telling the now biiiig line of customers: "sorry i am out of change, have to close the till."

after all that i wont hear a bad word about Walmart, the entertainment is first class and my headache came back from all the laughing!!!

I missed your 1st story, so I read that one too...good stuff, that... :applause:

My Grand daughter used to work part-time at Wally World (Walmart) a few years ago, and they did have a "card all" policy for alcohol purchases back then.  It may still be in effect for all I know...

I'm actually thinkin' about them glasses she had on...maybe a Pub patron wouldn't have to wait until closing time for the girls to get prettier...just go in & greet the lads, quaff a pint or two, put the glasses on... and...and...MAGIC!!!

WalMart policy now is, "If you look under 40" they will card you. P.S.I work for them.

Now that's a daft policy. If the legal age for buying alcohol is 21, why hassle people that look under 40 instead of under 21? All that does is make red tape for the sake of making red tape.

Yes that is why I was late getting to your house. It was a hard won case of beer, but I do like a challenge sometimes. ;)

Hey cut the girl some slack...maybe she has a thing for older gents and was just trying to get his home address...or as comedian Ron White says: "There just ain't no fixing STUPID!" I was in management of Wally World for eight years. The joke was that you had to pass the IQ test to work there...If you hit the cup for the drug screening you were hired...

Ok, have your laughs on this, but it could have been much much worse.   In some states, in order to buy alcohol, the person selling it, must also be 21 years of age.  So, picture this if you will,   After all the hemming and hawing, you finally dig in and show her your passport, which she can obviously not read because the best she could do was to hit the cup, and then tells you, you must wait for a manager to come approve the sale, or worse, tells you you must go to a different cashier.
 :readit:

By the way the photos from wally world are priceless, but keep smiling, most of those people think they are HOT...

Am I right in assuming the staff are allowed to use their judgment in this, ie if someone obviously looks old enough to be their father just take their money and give them the beer? If so you need enough 40 plussers to refuse to show ID instead of handing it over like robots to every Tom, Dick and Harry who can't be bothered to look.
I don't know about you guys, but I dont want my alcohol buying habits in any store or government database. Next thing is the insurance companies get hold of the info, or the marketing spammers.
