Honda has a lot invested in their "trademark" horizontally opposed multi cylinder engine.

The wings in general have gotten too big. How about a new wing with a high tech, high performance horizontally opposed 4. It'll still be instantly recognizable as a GW, could be cheaper due to a lot less parts (always a good thing), and lighter. Every pound less of motorcycle is another pound of cargo capacity.

A lower seat height would be nice and it would add to the list of potential buyers.

regarding bags I think HOnda so go with the quick mount approach and offer owners standard and "jumbo" size bags and trunk. Let the buyer decide how much luggage capacity he needs.

How about it, Honda. Redesign the 1975-1983 Gold Wing for diesel power. 1000/1200/1400 cc. A simple bore change would do it. Aerodynamic, lightweight, weather protection and bags/trunk with large capacity. A 400 mile range. Some of us live out in the country where gas stations are few and far apart. Make changes only to meet the law and rider input. Ease of routine maintenance (oil and filter, air filter, tire changes). Electrical power for heated grips, clothes, lights, and radios (an external alternator?) is good. Analog gages- oil pressure, amp meter, temperature, tach and speedometer. A manually adjustable windscreen height while moving......a slider handle for 4 to 5 inches rise.

A seat adjustable from 24 to 32 inches (for short to long legs-male and female) and comfortable for long distances.

Front and rear tires the same size and big enough to carry the weight we tourers put on these machines. Front and rear wheels can be designed identical to cut down on the amount of parts required. Remove one disc and install the drive hub to use as front or rear.

Designing it for one model with three engines, for long term manufacturing without changes will keep the cost down for manufacturing and for the buyers.

A base model is just that- a basic machine. Fairing, bags and trunk. Next step up adds ABS. Next step is radio. Give it three or four colors and don't change them. If we want a different color, we'll paint it.

An optional trailer hitch for a lightweight trailer (300 pounds, loaded) can be added at any level. Maybe even make a trailer to go with it with large diameter wheels.

I like the idea of a smaller wing too.  I love my 1200 but it is old and because of
neglect from previous owners it needs lots of repair time.  My buddy has a 1500 and
I don't want to hurt his feelings, but I don't like the 1500s or 1800s.
If I could get a brand new 1200, or two...
If they had continued making fuel injected 1200s instead of jumping up to 1500s..
Two models, a standard version and an Aspencade version.

My next bike will probably be another 1200.   One that has been loved and cared for and is in close to showroom condition.  But it would be nice to get something brand new.

(edit:   been awhile since I read this, and I somehow missed Wexie's complaint that this forum was designed for only serious suggestions to Honda engineers -- and so I self-moderated myself, and edited my last post......)

My serious suggestion: the Wing is getting too big for some of us, make it smaller; or, failing that, bring to America.....

the Honda Deauville......

If Honda's listening and watching they should be hearing/seeing at least two patterns as illustrated in this thread;

1. There is a market for a new Wing that puts all competitors in their place, at the back of the pack. Show them other guys that we not only can, and historically have but will continue to dominate in this category. Make it a V8 if that's what's needed to do it. We'll all jump up and down, stick out our tongues and wave good-bye to the also-rans. We won't all line up to buy one but it will be nice to point at it and say, "Be careful what you say about my ride or I'll call big brother over." There is a large enough ridership in the 1500/1800 range of Goldwings that love the newer/bigger idea to gobble up any new offering Honda might design in the big boy class.

2. The Goldwing doesn't need to be a single stream/size machine to be successful. Just a small search on the internet reveals that there is a massive market for a smaller tourer. There are sites/forums for every size Goldwing ever produced with adherents to their steeds but an underlying tone of wishfulness for a newer, maintainable, abundant part supply model. And they're not looking for a sport tourer. A real touring bike with all the comforts and amenities a touring bike should have. Touring style seating position, large storage capacity, safety features, etc that define a touring bike. A smaller version Goldwing, and DON'T call it a Silverwing! My son rides an'81 GL500 and he'd love to shoot the idiot at Honda that created a scooter and showed such a lack of creativity that they had to call it a Silverwing. IF Honda introduced a Jr Goldwing (let them give it a worthy name) I and thousands of others like me would be lining up to order the first one. Unfortunately the value of all the 4 cyl classics still on the road would plummet because of the shift from "classic riders" to "avante garde" new Jr Goldwing owners and the subsequent glut of classics on the market.

My wish list:
1200/1300 cc 4 cyl - Don't let the politically correct crowd influence you. Make it a fuel efficient gas miser with low emissions. Gas engines are capable of that.
Multi-valved, fuel injected - those tech improvements that weren't around on bikes in the '75-'87 era
Substantial protection for rider AND passenger - make my wife believe that a day on the road as a passenger is not a form of wife abuse.
Detachable bags so I don't look like I'm traveling with shopping bags when I walk into the hotel. I LOVED my Hondaline detachables that I put onto my '78. Twist of a key and my luggage came with me.
Flexibility in driver positioning - my 35 in-seam needs lots of room but wife's 29 in-seam (110 lbs, but I didn't tell you!) leaves her short on ANY Goldwing. I end up acting as training wheels, not the safest way to travel and her riding it solo is not an option in the current configuration.
ABS - forget the NAVI crap. I love maps and it's an excuse to stop and see where I got lost this time. Some of my favorite rides have happened when I've been hopelessly lost. Give me the safety over the gimmicks.
Entertainment - come on. It's 2009. my son lives off an Ipod smaller than a pack of matches. He does the music at big parties with an amp no bigger than the one in my 1200, 2 36" speaker units and a laptop that could blow the roof off a house. It shouldn't take much space/weight/complexity to integrate a system that meets the needs - tunes, talk to the partner, talk to the neighbor riding beside me, phone home to check on the kids.
6 speeds - as I've moved up through the sizes the thing I've appreciated most is the reduction of RPM at 70 mph ('78/4000, '83/3750, '86/3500 approx.) with the accompanying reduction in noise and vibration. I know Honda can do this without sacrificing power because I see what they do with their cars. My brother-in-law is able to start off the line in 4th gear with relative ease in his'08 Accord. And I don't want to start a comparison war, but BeeMer's 1200 tourer sure is smooth in 6th.
A hitch - My brother drives a Toyota Echo (1.3 liter engine) and tows a small trailer to carry the camping gear. A substantial percentage of Goldwing owners pull trailers. Don't run away because you fear some liability issues and don't tell me the bike doesn't have enough power. And the handling characteristics? We're driving vehicles that are inherently dangerous. We adapt. Design it. Add it. Set the parameters for keeping the warranty valid.

Living in a country where the big boy with all the toys will set you back over $30,000 dollars and cost $3500 in insurance each year I just don't have the funds or desire to keep up with the Jones' but I'd like to stay related. Build two sizes and we will buy.

Now, where do I sign up and put down my deposit on a Jr Goldwing?

My uncle was the one who not only introdused me to motorcycles, but was a honda mechanic, he did and still does love them. But when he wanted to buy a new motorcycle, he was looking for something around the 500 to 650 cc range and found Honda not there. As a result he bought a Kawasaki. It's a nice bike, but momma honda lost a sale, and in this economy, the smaller lighter bikes will be in demand.

That was actually ape sounds. Tim Allen's whole shtick was about men not really evolving, at least where tools were concerned.

On a more relevant note. I think an updated GL1200 would be nice. And perhaps a good seller for Honda. Probably the only reason I still have mine is because nobody, including Honda, has made anything that is equal.

I used to buy a new bike every 5 years or so. This bike just turned 22.

The problem seems to be a miscommunication. We don't want a "Pacific Coast" or a "DN01". We want a smaller sportier "Gold Wing"! Flat four, cruise control, weather protection, sound would be nice and luggage space.

It shouldn't be that hard. Just drag out the blue prints of a 1987 model, switch to modern fuel injection, update the look a little, (that could be new head & tail lights) and above all keep the cost down. 22K is absurd for a motorcycle.

The 12 was a real hot rod for the sporty types and still big and luxurious enough to pack the wife and enough duds for a 2 week romp across the U.S. and back.

And Honda, all the real R&D is already done!
