I realize that most of the problems that people have with cracked trunk lids with racks mounted is because of either over loading or incorrectly drilling and mounting of the rack.
It seems that Honda could help prevent this problem by beefing up the material in the lid without adding much weight to the bike.
Having been a former Harley Ultra Classic owner/rider and knowing several other Harley owners, I have never seen this problem with trunk lids cracking.

| I agree with that Kikker. I recently fitted a set of Kuryakyn rack risers which, having a larger surface area than the standard fittings, does help to spread the load. However, whilst I had everything stripped down to fit the rack risers I also fabricated some small gauge plate to fit the underside of the trunk lid. I also bonded this plate and with the rack bolted right through trunk lid and plate, the trunk lid is much firmer.

i have put in 3mm alloy plate in readiness for the rack, and guess what......the lid opens and closes 100% better with it in place...........

I'd like to see that too.
I am all for any way to increase the carrying capacity of the Goldwing. The trunk and the saddlebags do not have the carrying capacity it looks like they have and Goldwings are designed for travelling long distance - I don't want to have to pull a trailer. By increasing the load capacity of the trunk lid, we could essentially double the carrying capacity of the Goldwing. By putting a 'rack' on to of the saddlebags as well, the carrying capacity could be increased by similar amounts each time.

I'm also about halfway convinced that part of the problem that I haven't seen or heard anyone talk about is the use of a trunk rack for a handle for raising and lowering the trunk lid. That may explain the reason some people are experiencing cracks in the lid and some are not.
I've witnessed people that have a trunk rack on their Wings using the rack to force the trunk lid down when the truck may be a little over filled.
Also, allowing the lid to drop to latch it may cause the cracking over a period of time.
I don't have a rack on my '06 yet but I do catch myself dropping the lid and in some cases use the spoiler for a handle.

| I agree with Kikker, it is unfortunate that Honda does not look at the real uses the bike receives from its owners and beef that lid up. Mine has spider cracks coming out of each hole from the previous owner. I guess this winter it goes to a body shop to see what they can do to fix the cracks, beef it up, and repaint it as necessary. Kind of an unnecessary expense in my opinion because of poor engineering.

i have mentioned this before but will repost it, have a local shop roll you a sheet of 3mm aluminium plate to contour the inside of your lid, nil stress fractures after that has been done.......

Ive got a rack ordered and I'm wondering.Can I just put some big washers on the inside to reinforce that way or go with a plate?

If it were me doing it, I would not use flat washers. Mainly because the inside of the truck lid is not perfectly flat..........I think. If it is completely flat, it may not be a bad idea because anything would be better than nothing for reinforcement. Maybe some guys have done this and gotten by with it.

I have installed a trunk rack on mine and used these washers with the Rack risers. They risers give you a larger footprint to spread out the weight better.

They work great no cracks here but I almost screwed up when installing the rack with the risers. I made all the marks for the holes with out the risers on. When when the risers are in place the mounting holes are different. Just be careful measure over and over and if you don't feel comfortable doing it then take to the dealer. If they screw it up they will have to buy you a new lid...lol

| A friend of mine had the misfortune to get his HD Fat Boy down and had to have his windshield, and a few other parts, replaced. I noticed the 3/4 " Stainless Steel straps on the windshield and asked him if I could have them. I cut two pieces of proper length and attached then on top of my trunk lid between the lid and the luggage rack. My lid had already cracked even though there were reinforcing washers between the rack and lid and underneath the lid. The straps covered the crack and actually look quite good. (I wish I had done this BEFORE the lid cracked.) I used one of the existing mounting holes and drilled another where required. There was an extra hole that I filled with a Stainless Steel bolt and Acorn Nut. If interested I can send photo.

I think I can answer the why on this one. Most all touring bikes Honda included have plus or minus a 400 pound load weight. All trunks and or saddle bags are limited to plus or minus 20 pounds. It is simply the design or function engineering, so from a manufacturers viewpoint, a trunk rack is an owner accessory that violates the design function.
With dealing with the public these days, was I a person to make the decision on add reinforcement to the trunk lid and or provide molded thread bosses and install rubber plugs at the factory......I would simply say no. Someone will load up the rack, have a wreck and sue us for it.....so no rack!!
Hey if you do get a crack in the plastic.....you an drill a small 1/8 inch hole at the very end of the crack......that will stop it from spreading any further. Kit

| Not only do people overload the trunk rack, a lot of them also use the rack for a handle to close and open the lid. When the lid is dropped to latch the lid, it can potentially cause cracking.

I've had the trunk rack on my 1500 for a couple of years, now. No cracks. I have the little rubber mounts and washers. I don't load it much, though. Mostly my tent or sleeping bag when I camp.
I will admit I use it as a trunk handle, though. It's just too convienient. I never force or slam the trunk lid down, though.

My old tour box had one of the corners broken off some, I drilled 1/8in holes at ends of cracks opened them up with my dremel some and repaired them with exopy as per Rudy....The lid had a rack on it also but no cracks I still am having a plate made for under side of rack and will be using "star" washers to remount with. I found the star washers on several sites. the ones with rubber washer on them were twice as high as those without washers... I bought the star washers without rubber and used a piece of 1in conduit that I sharpened to cut washers then used regular gasket hole punches to put the 1/4 in hole in the center. Time to make rubber washers ( 12 total ) 20 min...cost of rubber sheet nada, had made some rubber drawer liners out of rubber gasket material at chemical plant....Retapped all rack mounting holes to clean out threads, now I will be using stainless steel bolts and washers.
I don't think that my luggage racks will ever be used much but they were there from PO and I like the way they look......
