the 1200 had a lot older technology considering it was carbed, and the elctronic ignition was primative by todays standards.... with a modern fuel injection and electronic ignition I bet it could do a lot better.  I routinely get 40-45 mpg on my 2005 HD, which is far better than my 78 gl1000

I understand you need to meet legislated demands, but short of that, unnecessary complication is counter productive. This is one of the biggest reasons prospective GL buyers are purchasing Harley Davidsons.

Also, there is no need to have an engine larger than the 1200 cc. With fuel prices steadily rising a newer version of the GL1200 would be a good seller. I personally will not buy an 1800 for that reason, but if a smaller capacity, lighter, less complex version was offered I most definitely would. I could easily afford a new GL1800, but I bought a carefully used GL1200 instead because it was simple enough that I could understand it.

I have a 1500 but in my experiences riding along with 1800 owners I see the 1800 getting higher gas mileage than mine consistently.

I agree with repeat. Best bike on the road. All the old Harley riders in Texas and bike clubs are all switching and trading their Harley's in for more comfort. Its called the baby boomers are all retiring and want comfort and style, not just the ride to the ice house to drink a beer. We want to ride all during the week and let the ones that work have the roads and drunks on the weekends. Also if Honda would really develop their advertising on cable channels, they could own a very large majority of the market.

I have had some folks look at mine (GL1800) and wish they could have one. But it is to 'big' for them. They are all of 5' tall. But an HD would be a bit big for them too. There is merit to having a smaller GW.

For me, it is just the reverse. It fits me. I like it. Love the power. That's the reason I bought it. Even so, the addition of a baby GW is a good idea. HD does it......the Sportster. Years a go they had the '45'. But I digress.

Why not add a smaller GW? I know what it is like to see something I'd like to have, only to have it to small for me to fit into. Now may not be the time to do it. But in the future, Honda might think about this one. One size does not fit all.

It is a lot more complex than my old shovel. I like my shovel head. Still nothing I can't figure out. Unfortunately, electronics has taken over everything. Only thing I can do about that, is adapt.....the best I can.

There was a rumour many years ago about a flat 8 for the wing. That turned into the current flat 6 we have. The 1800 is wonderful. To those that think it is bigger than the 1500 they are right but here is a surprise for you. It is 50 pounds lighter so it is actually a bit easier to ride. If Honda did come out with the flat 8 of, oh say, 2000cc I would have to have one!!!

It's called the 'BossHog'.

Honda could do this. If I'd have been 20 years younger, I'd have got one. This is one hell of a machine.

The old baby Goldwing was the Silverwing. 500cc then 650cc liquid cooled, 8 valve, shaft drive. Came with full fairing, hard bags, etc.. Easy to maintain and simple by newer wing standards. At higher RPM they sound like a V8. This is my naked version.

BMW's K1200GT has plenty of power and a list of options that put the current G/W to shame and the weight is akin to the ol' FCW 1000's.  That 150+ HP H.O. four banger will suck the plastic right off those 1800's.  Handling?  Forgit-aboud-it!

I agree that girth and displacement of the current G/W is overkill ->AND UNREALISTIC FOR A 21ST CENTURY MOTORCYCLE!

I'd like to see HEATED/AUTO DEFROST WINDSCREENS and HEATED/AUTO DEFROST/ANTI-GLARE MIRRORS.  This technology is available in automobiles and the same driving situations that create the need in cars occur on motorcycles.

These bikes should also be built like the cars Honda makes; as MODULAR Point-of-Sale units ready for a whole catalog of manufacturer approved, readily mounted and preengineered for installation accessories that allow the individual customer to custom modify their ride to meet their NEEDS as well as their "Bling" wants.

That's "Bling" as in garish as opposed to "Bleeping" as in boorish {for youse in Chicago land} :cheeky1:

P.S.  And "Engineered and approved" means that the Charging system is ready to support it.  That BMW has an 800+ Amp Alternator!

Actually it is more like 800 watts at 60 amps.  Where as the GL1800 produces 1.2 KW. or appox 1000 watts at 13 volts or about 77 amps.

Having rode both bikes, there are some things with  the BMW that are what I would call user friendly.  Such as the electric windshield and stand.

The rock hard seat is not user friendly, go take a 300 mile ride on a BMW and then come talk to me.

As for power and instant response, well, nothing compares to the 1800.

Not trying to run the BMW down, it is a neat bike for sure, but it cannot even begin to compare with the performance and power of the 1800.  I suppose one would think it quite the thing, if one had never ridden an 1800, but once you have, no one needs to tell you the difference.

I rode Harley's for twenty years and still love them, but was ready to get a dresser.  I looked at the Ultra, then, even though I knew I would never buy a Honda, I went next door to the Honda Dealer 'just to check out the Goldwing'.  Didn't even ride one, just compared the comfort, features, etc.  I was sold.  Less than two months later I had one.

I've rode less complicated bikes, and I still love Harleys, but I don't think any other bike offers the performance, handling, cushy comfort, easy to use switches, cruise control, reverse, radio, mp3, navigation, CB, Airbag, ABS, heated seats (best way to get your better half to ride) heated grips, excellent wind protection, etc, etc, etc, plus tons of available add-ons as does the 1800.  If you want all of that, you have to have complicated.  Luxury rides are complicated by nature.

I've ridden a friend's 1500, and I thought that was a rocket ship too.  The 1800 still gets about the same gas mileage as smaller cc Wings, so why not have all 1832 of those cc's?  It is about as light a bike as a loaded luxury tourer can be, and the low cg and balance makes it feel even lighter.  (The 1800 is not perfect though, I wonder if I could get them to put an espresso maker on it?)

ABS and Airbag's are complicated items that add lots of wiring, pickups, computers, etc., but worth their weight in gold if you ever need them.  (I hope I wasted a grand on that Airbag and never deploy it, but then again, I don't want my last thought before I hit the left turner to be gee,  I should have opted for the Airbag.)

1000's, 1100's, 1200's, 1500's, 1800's, there is a Wing for all tastes, and all motorcycles are made for the rider that likes them, every ride has a rider, ever rider a ride.
