In response to: "why do you 'americans' chrome everything?"

Why do you buy your wife a diamond ring instead of a plain ring???? Riding a bike with no chrome is like riding a dirt bike........it's ugly and dirty but fun.........a 'touring bike' requires an attitude.........it is at the top of the ladder in the motorcycle families............it is to be treated as such, just like you treat your wife when you buy her that "diamond" ring instead of an ugly ol' plain ring...............and to answer your question more directly..................."americans" put chrome on their bikes because we "can"..it's called freedom of will!!!!!

P.S. not all "americans" like chrome

MOD. if this is too harsh please delete it

"why do you americans chrome everything"?

1st; most of us don't. almost all of us do some upgrades to our bikes but performance and convenience upgrades (more efficient (not simply louder) exhausts, suspension upgrades, luggage, seats, electronics,) far exceed simple chrome coverings.

for some it's a way to individualize their mass produced bike. Unfortunately it's been going on so long that chromed parts no longer confer any individuality but just make the rider "another guy with a chromed out HArley". A friend at a harley dealer told me the average new harley goes out the door with $4000 of chrome accessoires.

the extreme case is the chromed everything "chopper" which is far more capable as a lawn or driveway ornament than an actual mode of transportation.

stated simply, the chromed out bikes belong in the "more money than brains" category.

I had an 84 1200. Loved that little bike. Bought a new 09 1800 in Aug and sold it last week. Too much stuff, too heavy, badly needs a 6th gear. Different strokes, etc.

"why do you americans chrome everything"?

Well right now I don't have a 'wing. But I will very soon.
I'm still undecided on the 1500 or the 1800. I've ridden an 1800 and all I could say was "O M G" and a huge sh*t eatin grin. Haven't ridden a 1500 yet. My wife and I are going to start doing a bit of long distance touring, and the current bike just ain't got what it takes.

As for the chrome (yes, my handle is Chrome, but it's kinda like calling a big guy "tiny"). My current ride is a V-Star 1100 Midnight custom. Very little chrome, the handlebars (custom) are even powder coated black.

I'd rather do some custom paint than chrome, and the 'wing has a lot of real estate for that.

Different strokes for different folks.... Just my 2c

Oh yeah, first post :)

I do not like chrome. I prefer solid colors and black as the trim.

My suggestion would be to go ride one and see for yourself. ;)

I absolutely love mine! :action:

Pinkpork- this is hysterical...um, where do I GET one? :D Also, have you any advice/advise, on touring Europe, on that?

I never did get to ride the GL1500- Silverfox tried but, knowing my penchant for falling over, standing still, I wisely refused! Am I a friend, or what? :cheeky1:

I suspect the major horsepower boost came with the GL1500, as intimated elsewhere on this site. I must say though, having finally gotten a few days and 1500 miles on a GL1800, that the newest Wing is-

1) Incredibly well balanced- it handles far better than my GL1000 and my GL1100. Even with a lard-ass like myself aboard, you can run it right to the pegs, and it is rock-solid and stable. Clearly, there has been a learning curve going on, with suspension.

2) The 6 cylinder 1800 engine....that seemed excessive to me, too, until I rode one. The pay off is a torque curve that goes from nothing to infinity. If you like dancing, at high speed, down back country roads, just put it in 4th gear...you'll never leave! :action:

3) I'm the sort who tends to tour to the music in my head, and I'm good with that. When I finally figured out (about 2-1/2 days in) how to work the stereo (you push the rocket launcher button for volume, and the surface-to-air missile button, to change station), it was an absolute joy. I've had the "Vetter Sound" thing before- one is better off, with a Sony Walkman! To be able to HEAR distant stations, loud and clear, whilst riding along at 70mph (accommodating my English mates, there) is, well...amazing!

Anyone want to loan me 20 Grand???? I'm a reliable bloke, as they say....:D:D:D:D

You need to get your own facts straight. Breath a little slower yourself.

Nothing is mixed up here, except maybe you.
