I feel automatic transmission is missing. Technology now exists for AT to be better than manual. It is like this on many cars, why not on Goldwing?

Yes, tiptronic tranny would be good, provided that the brakes would work in the wet. I'm no fan of auto-tranny and emergency braking in winter.

Wouldn't an auto tranny be dangerous on a bike?

Think about if the bike decided to change gears while you were cornering? It could be fairly dangerous. Probably why the hondamatic never caught on.

Rather depends on how the transmission shifted I would imagine. A CVT setup wouldn't cause a problem, neither would a shiftless system like the old GM turbo glide as used in the 1957 Chevy (I think it was). A well engineered set up that shifted smoothly ought to corner okay.

CVT is the way forward, with a full-auto option. One of the mid-size Suzuki scooters already has this.

The scooters already have an automatic tranny, it's one of the things that makes them a scooter I believe.  The Silver Wing is a 600cc bike that easily travels at highway speeds, and it has the Automatic V-Matic belt drive tranny.

Seems like it ought to be possible to design a computer controlled, electrically shifted and clutched automatic conversion to a mechanical transmission.

New to the forum and came across this thread.  The brand of motorcycle Leolarry may be thinking of is called Ridley.  They make cruiser-styled motorcycles with CVT transmissions.  Briefly looked at them for my wife, but she didn't like the styles.

Hey now, don't knock the Hondamatic.  That was a sweet little bike.  I don't know about putting an auto on a bike.  Call me a snob,  but if it were easy to ride a bike, everyone would do it.  I kinda like the mystery and exclusivity of my non-biker friends staring in awe as i roll up on two wheels.:cooldj:

It would make a nice option, not standard equipment.

:Dthis weeks motorcycle news, theres a article on a new bike for 2007 hondas dn-01 hydraulic drive, it uses a v twin engine developed from the deauvillie, but insted of gears the dn-01s engine is connected to a hydraulic pump, which sends hydraulic fluid to a turbine driving the rear wheel via a shaft, valves alter the flow of hydraulic fluid to offer a complete variable transmission.  thats all i can find on it at the moment, but will keep my eyes open;)

Many of you folks here probably never heard of it, but way back when [in the late 70s], Moto Guzzi sold an automatic transmissioned 1,000 cc cycle called the M G Convert!  Get this: A funeral director down in TX had 6 of them and used them as a private funeral procession escort team, no less! It had 2 ranges[hi-lo], with downshift lever operated by left foot. Go to ebay and type in item # 8051352591, to see a picture of the LAPD VERSION of the machine. TTFN.......papasmurf in NH

Hey guys,

Read my signature-line - been there a while now. For 'twist 'n' go ' read CVT transmission.

The Yam TMax XP500 (i.e. 500cc, well just under) is a scooter which is essentially a bike set-up from a frame and engine position point of view. It rides and corners like a bike and is no problem in corners and curves.

On the odd occasion I have been out on it with my mates on their Wings I have had no problem keeping up; in fact it is quicker handling due to its smaller dimensions. It doesn't have the same top speed and it is no substitute for the Wing, but it is a good avertisement for autotran. Always in the right 'gear' at the right time. Braking? Can't say I've noticed any problem; and I am not technically proficient enough to know whether CVT offers greater engine braking than ordinary autotran.

I think a CVT Wing would be an attractive proposition, but Honda would probably make it prohibitively priced - unless someone beat them to it of course.

I had a Honda 400 with a 2 position automatic in it.

It had a high and low setting and worked quite well and was quite fun to drive. It downshifted itself.    Wish I had kept it.

This Itallian Diamo Velux also has a cvt transmission, along with windshield wipers and a digital rear view mirror.   All the things I think I could use more than the airbag. :headbanger:

http://www.ls-motorsports.com
Click on the picture of the Velux to see it.

On the other hand, my '95 20th Anniversary edition Wing came with a book that  'said they became too heavy with the autos trans installed and that Honda  actually did experiment with them years before for the Wings.

I would surely like to have an automatic on my wing too, for the same reasons I don't have a 4 speed in my Caddy.....but I'm not 25 anymore either.

Here's a picture of the AutoMatic 400 Honda

That blue Honda-matic 400 is identical to my first street bike. Mucho nostalgia.

Hey RevBlues,

If you like that, here is another picture that shows the transmission indicator too.

I loved that bike.

It was a nice running machine, and my wife used to drive it too.

I still was hoping to see an 8 CYLINDER WING, with AUTO TRANS!

Can everyone say Honda FJS600 Silverwing? It's their CVT "luxury" scooter. Rated to do 100+mph.
