:)   What about detachable box's on the 1800's, a mate of mine has the genuine honda detachable box's on a varadero and they take the chore of trying to pack, and close the cover at the same time,at least with these you can take them into accommodation with you and pack properly and they would take much more

Yes, the detachable trunk on the GL1100 was a good idea, although most people I know leave it on all the time.

I think the saddlebag liners are the better workaround. With the cost of Honda plastics, I doubt many of us want to be banging our Honda trunk or saddlebags off hotel reception desks etc. Also, the way the wiring for the lights and the locking mechanism are looped into the boxes might be a problem making them removable.

Got to admit to going with Andy1800 with this one, I'd rather be banging the liners around than the panniers and topbox.

Years ago, I had removable hard saddlebags on a Kawasaki. Although it made cleaning the bike a lot easier, when I travelled the bags would get filthy with rode grime/ rain etc. I felt compelled to wash them off before bringing them into someone's home or any decent hotel. Liners are the way to go. Just don't over stuff them or they won't fit into the boxes. By the way, the old boxes were very rectangular and held a ton. The 1800 boxes are awkward and a little skimpy for a touring bike.

I thought the luggage space on the 1800 was it's main shortcoming. I can get a lot more stuff in my 1500. On a road trip I can stow everything including my tent and sleeping bag in the bags, nothing tied on. Ought to be able to do that with the 1800.

Do they make liners for  the 1984 GL1200 I ??   I like the idea of being able to take everything inside first then unpack it.

Yup there are liners for the 1200, seen a few sets go on ebay for bout $75us, sometimes more if they are the aspencade ones that have 'Aspencade' embroidered onto the bags.  Bit pricey to me for what look to be cheap duffle bags.  One of these days I will check at Walmart for some bags that fit the sides, already have a nice leather duffle that fits the trunk perfect :)

That's what I have, a nylon trunk liner came with my 1500 and I use a couple small duffles for the side bags. That works well since I have stuff in the side bags that I don't want to remove from the bike at stops, tools, raingear, etc.

JC Whitney has aftermarket liners that fit the 1100 and 1200 for $30 each.  I am going to get myself a set of these before summer gets here.

This is a very good idea. I really enjoyed that feature on my Harley Ultra Classic. It made for better access for replacing the rear brakes and cleaning.

The twist locks on the inside of the Ultra Classic saddlebag are easy to operate.

I agree.  Detachable Saddlebags would be nice, plus the additional feature of access to the rear wheel area.  It certainly wouldn't be difficult to put in a locking mechanism.

My BMW K100rt has detachable bags and they really make getting to the rear tire and wheel so much easier.  Not to mention you just take them inside and load them or unload them.  I don't stay at too many nice hotels while riding but they wipe off easy if that should be a problem.

When we bought the 1100 in 1982 it came with saddle bag liners and a removable trunk. In the last 25 years, the trunk has been off the bike only for cleaning. We have been from California to Key West on this bike and the bag liners and trunk top duffel have been the answer.

Your right BRowan :clapper: no one takes them off. :jumper:

:walker::18red::walker:

I love the removable trunk on my GL1100.  On short trips, I just pack the saddlebag liner and take it in the hotel, but on long trips, I pack the trunk and remove it.  It's much easier and you can pack more "folding clothes" and have them fairly wrinkle free.  In fact, WVboy took his trunk in the hotel on our last SERRASJ trip, so don't say "no one" takes them off. We're not nobodys!!!:goofygrin:
