So, I have to take my bike in for warranty work on the turn signal button. I told the service manager about the issue with the XM radio and he contacted his area rep. The rep tells him that I am the FIRST person to report a problem with the XM radio.

I find that hard to believe.

Well, I've heard the same with Honda cars, BMW motorcycles, etc. It's the party line response. It is basically BS!

Just as we suspected. The service manager didn't even know where the factory antenna was. It kind of ticks me off that we always hear about Honda quality, but when it comes down to it, they still seem to think it is "just a motorcycle." If you buy a $18000 car, the dealers generally treat you well and make things right.

But, buy a $25,000 motorcycle and they seem to think that the XM shouldn't be perfect, the fuel-injection lope is "normal" and have no clue on setting up a CB and have never heard the term SWR. Instead they tell you to take the $800 dollar CB to a CB shop. What exactly did I just pay for?

Overall, I love the bike, but I really feel that these bikes are way too much for most dealerships to handle.

Finally, if you mention that you've read about the problems on the internet, they immediately roll their eyes and imply you can't believe anything you read there. OH YEAH? So I shouldn't believe any of the GOOD things I read either?

Sheeesssshhhh!

I still love the bike and had a great trip last week. I just realize I have to fix some things myself now.

Had a tough time finding wrecking yards that have or even catalog the XM antennas. Finally said screw it and order the Honda wiring harness for the XM and NAV unit. That will get me both plugs and then I can start experimenting. If nothing else, I won't have to splice the installed harness.

I'm considering installing the XM Motorcycle antenna on the trunk or the spoiler. Any one have experience with the antenna back there?

Well, it took a while for me to get around to this, but I was able to get the wiring harness and a MC antenna from Satellite Superstore. Cut and replaced the connector on the antenna with the one from the harness. I made a small piece of Plexiglas to stick the antenna on and slid that between the trunk and passenger backrest.

Rode a route that always gave me a dropout with the factory antenna. Not a single dropout with the new setup.

I'll get pictures tomorrow. I am going to have to make a more pleasant looking mount, but I am thrilled with the improvement in reception.

Any update?

I just purchased my 2010 GL1800 with Nav, and I am glad to have read this forum thread. I have not activated my XM service yet, and after reading this I am questioning doing it. So seeing a followup to your last post in November would be great.

Thanks,

LD

In reply to the XM radio problem, I also have a 2010 with the same problem.  Bad reception on roads with a lot of trees.  I took the XM antenna out from under the dash & placed on top of the dash, what an improvement, for the 70 miles I drove, XM didn't drop out once.  Leaving on a trip to western Canada soon will keep you(s) updated.

This was never the best part fo teh forum for this dedgar, it's only the feedback for Honda forum.
Best to start a new thread with your XM problem in the technical forum.

I don't have XM on my GW. I was looking here for the answers these guys were coming up with.
