Hi all, I am going to get a new Goldwing. A friend said I should not get the ABS system because in his BMW the ABS required yearly flushing and maintenance. Is this true for the Goldwings?

06 and up calls for break fluid change every 12,000 miles. I hate ABS on cars but I love it on the bike, have used it twice, just slam them on and let do it's job. It's great, Walter

The ABS is an absolutely needed on a bike as large as a 1500, you load up one of these beasts with 2 riders all the gear and a trailer and then try a panic stop on wet pavement without ABS.............. need I say more?

Brake / clutch fluids are maint items . They should be flushed/ changed periodically on any model bike .

I have not spoken to anybody that has the ABS that does not like it. I was wondering if it functions badly on gravel roads. Anybody have info. on that one?

I have the abs on my VTX and truly love it. I changed ALL the brake and cluch fluid to synthetic a couple years after I bought it. Have'nt looked back since. I plan on changing it this winter again. Twice in nine years is not too bad. With the Mity vac pump its a breeze.

There is no legit concern between a bike with ABS or one without in respect to maintenance and flushing of fluids. It is the same either way. No more than two years at the most. Many like to bury head in sand like a big bird. They are old school, set in their ways, and are totally against ABS brakes. Just smile at them, go to You Tube and watch actual factory and private video about the use of ABS brakes, then make your choice. You will learn nothing on forum discussion about ABS brakes other than backwards thoughts. So go research, learn, watch, and then choose. Buy one with an airbag too, if you can afford it and it is not a money consideration. Anything that can help you cannot hurt you. Kit

Go with the ABS and Airbag. When I was considering the airbag I asked a dealer how many bought it. He said, "You seen the demo on Utube?" I said, "Yes." He replied, "Everyone that's seen that demo buys the airbag if they can afford it." ABS is excellent technology and a reasonably skilled rider (like me) can't out perform it. I'm sure some highly skilled riders believe they can and I will not argue with them, maybe they can, but most guys can't out perform ABS (IMHO). Maybe a skilled rider could out perfom it on occassion - but on every occassion? Doubtful. For instance, at the end of a long day, you are tired, your reaction is affected, but the computer is still ready to do it's thing, just like it was in the a.m. I like the linked braking system too. That's a nice video--of poor video quality, and nothing about ABS brakes. I regret that I will never get those 7.5 minutes of my life back... Last edited on Sat Dec 11th, 2010 11:27 pm by Lakeabilene |

Only a pro in perfect conditions can possibly out perform ABS, but even then it is not every time, throw in bad roads, wet weather, ect. and it is an entirely different story. Any rider can now achieve perfect braking all the time in any conditions thanks to ABS!

not even a professional can come close to stopping as fast in loose gravel as a bike with ABS. Most pros would just do a side slide to stop under those conditions.

I'd agree a highly skilled rider could do slightly better than an ABS if he knew what was coming. I doubt it with a sudden obstacle like a deer jumping out in front at night. One of the main reasons I sold my 1500 to buy an 1800 was for the ABS. It works very well. On a rutted gravel road going down a pretty good hill I've hit the brakes hard and nothing happened except the bike stopped. No skid, and full steering control with the brakes firmly on. I discovered how well ABS works on bikes a couple years ago on my brother's BMW. On sand and gravel it's very impressive. As for how well that skilled young rider can do, that's not me. I've been riding for over fifty five years but as many of us getting pretty long in the tooth with poorer vision as the decades passed. Reflexes slow down no matter how practiced you are. That's a good reason to get all the advantages you can and ABS is one of those advantages.

i know last summer it was sprinkling just enuf to make the roads a bit slick and some nimrod yanks out infront of me it went like this CLUTCH........ REAR BRAKE..... DOWNSHIFT........ and i throwed her sideways waitin for the collision and then she slammed in reverse and i cracked the throttle and it straighend out i tell ya abs would have been EXTREMELY HELPFUL in this problem......

I can outbreak most on a GL1800 that is without ABS, ...than most that have ABS, under any conditions. ABS decreases the skillset required for threshold braking, especially to new riders. It leads to overconfidence, and many get a surprise because of it. It is purely a safety feature designed for the masses under panic braking and not one designed for performance braking. Riders still need the skillsets of threshold braking to be at their maximum. Don't confuse it.
