When I read about all the Honda's people have owned, I seldom hear mentioned the V65.  I owned one and it was a real thrill to ride.  I put 65000 miles on it before the cam lobes wore off.  If I would have known about the problem before hand I could have added an air-cooled oiler on the bottom cylinders and would still own the bike.

However I would have probably killed myself because all it wanted to do was outrun Corvette's and Porsche's.

Oh for the good ole days!!

Your Friend,

I too had a V65 and like you it was probably the fastest bike I have ever owned.  It had the problem with upper oiling and there was also a problem with the lugs that engaged the gears in the tranny.  It had so much torque that the lugs were not up to the job and they wore down, especially in second, and the tranny could back out of 2nd. I believe it was even faster than my 1980 GS 1100E which had the Government Mandated 85 mph speedo! ;) Of course the 85 mph speedo kept you from driving tooooo fast!  I still remember a friend and I and our wives were riding two-up heading north out of Vegas on US 95.  The road was almost deserted and we met few cars. My buddy was in front and we were waaaay past 85 on the speedo.  I looked ahead and saw him waving at a car we were meeting?  We were country boys from Southern Indiana and surely there was no way he could know who was driving the car out here in the Nevada desert?  Then I saw why he was waving..... it was a Nevada State Police car!  I thought we were done for but I waved, the policeman waved, and we continued north @ 85+and he kept on going south?  I guess he figured if we were stupid enough to be driving that fast that the only ones we were going to harm was ourselves and we deserved it.

I had a V65 Magna; what a joy! Good God she could fly and didn't have wings, I miss her and when can afford to, I WILL buy another - just too much fun in one bike! :action::action::action::action::action::action:

In my signature, you will see that I have an '88 V45 Magna.
Commonly known as a second generation Magna, or SuperMagna.
They were manufactured in '87 as 700cc's (tariff time), and in '88 as 750cc's (U.S. ONLY - those manufactured elsewhere were all 750's)

A while back, an owner of one of these unique machines in England, managed to shoehorn the 1100 V65 engine into a SuperMagna frame.

http://www.supermagna.com/html/seagrave_v65_project.htm

He even posted the result on youtube.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc4n78MuxJ0

My Magna is my commuter. 36 miles each way to work every day.
Comfortable, agile, reliable, and fast - very fast!!
With a V65 engine installed..............:shock:...........it must be an eye-opening ride!!!

I still own my 84 V65 Magna. I'll sell the wing and the CBR before I'd ever turn loose of it.

Yup, I did the Dave Dodge oil mod awhile back. I also have a 3:40 differential waiting in a box. It has Galfer SS front brake lines and a titanium forkbrace plate. It also has progressive suspension and a 2" drop to go with the Corbin seat (I'm short ) The photo was taken on the Dragon at the last Honda Hoot.

Right now it's in the garage being fitted for a Vetter Quicksilver fairing. It has a 2 gallon tour tank that sits on the 6-pack rack so I can go 200+ between fill ups.

Prior to all this, I owned a pristine 83 V45 for about 10 years. Unfortunately, the putz that bought it, ran it into the ground in less than 6 months. :X

Back in 84 I went into the Honda dealership in Las Vegas, the one that sat out on Boulder Hwy specifically to rideout of there on that V65 beast. Had all the paperwork completed and while on the way out to ride the bike home when I saw this beautiful hunk of machinery known as the Goldwing Interstate. I had the salesman change the paperwork and the rest is history! But I just watched this video and it took my breath away. The only comment I have is that this guy has balls befitting a true Klingon, barbs and all! Even I would hesitate to do that especially going down the wrong side of the road.:cooldevil:

My cousin has a V65 not sure how many miles, but up there, I did notice it makes a ticking noise, I said sounds like your valves need adjusted.  He said when you get up there in miles they all do that, let me just throw that question out there.

yep could tell it was the dragon been there and done that. now that was a long trip for you.

if he hasn't done the oiler fix it will wear the cams down and ruin it for him. i don't think they are suppose to tick.

No, there's a kit that sends oil to the top end of the engine, because the stock oil supply is insufficient.

I had a 84 V65 Magna for a short time between my 82 1100 Aspy and the 84 1200 Aspy nice bike. Wished I could have kept it. I might someday get another. I watch out for them all the time:cool:
