Why did Honda stop including a Gear Position Indicator (other than Neutral, O/D and Reverse) on the GL1800's? I have ordered an 09 GL1800AD but my '85 GL1200 'Limited Edition' had a Gear Position Indicator and the GL1800 does not. It was a great piece of equipment. Hi, For the $$$$$ that is spent for a GL you would think it would be a standard feature  I ordered an aftermarket Gear Indicator GIPRO DS-H02 for my 2008 Honda GL1800 that works great & is easy to install, plugs into ECU plug under seat, comes in four different colors & has a two year Warranty. Hi, Thanx for the response. Does your bike have ABS? Mine does and I'm told the Gear Position Indicators are much more difficult to install on GL1800's WITH ABS!!!!????!!!!

Good evening, My GL1800 has Nav & ABS brakes....... as stated earlier, plugs into ECM plug under seat. comes with excellent instructions.

I 1st experienced a hear indicator back in the 70's when Suzuki used to put it on their 2 stroke road bikes. It's surprising how much you like it if you have one. Given that all bikes today have engine CPU's that "know" what gear the bike is in it seems stupid to me that the OEM's don't include a gear display.

More important for me than knowing what gear I am in is having an accurate speedometer. I'm seriously considering the Speedohealer from Healtech. In newer bikes with an electronic dash there is no reason why Honda could not program in a Gear Position Indicator. The ECU knows what gear you are in, just read the data from there and display it.

i wonder if you can get one for a harley my dad is deaf and most of the time when we ride around town he is always int too high of a gear and either kills or lugs the motor badly because he cant hear the tone of the motor and hard to feel sometimes

The Harley shakes so bad you can't feel it lugging??!!

That is true only for the types which plug into the gear indicator on the gearbox, as the connector you need access to is buried deep in the bike. The Gipro one does not connect there. This means, like the Accumate one I originally had, that it installs easily but the gear indication is only correct when the engine is running and the clutch is released (i.e. when moving) - because it works it out by comparing RPM and road speed. So you can't rely on it when pulled up at lights, for example.

Just ordered the GIPro for my '05 GL1800A.... we'll report back as to ease of installation in about 7 - 10 days

The GIPro installed without a hitch.... simple plug and play and just as simple, calibration. It should only take about 5 minutes to do that part. Here's the glitch.... it took me about 4 hours since, with backrest and armrests, the taking off the seat and ESPECIALLY putting it back on took awhile. OK... no big deal you might say.... but the '05 GL1800A is packed SO TIGHTLY.. there is very little room to run the cable well enough to hide it and make the install look custom.  Having said all that.... it's a VERY nice add-on.... and super easy to "install"... but all the extraneous stuff is a bit time comsuming. Bottom Line: GET ONE! I always seem to know what gear I'm in. Seems like thats part of riding a motorcycle or even driving a performance vehicle with a manual transmission. Seems to me that if I ever need an LED to tell me what gear I'm in on a motorcycle, it might be time to consider another hobby. Maybe when they install the gear indicator they should also install a forward facing camera and video monitor so you can see where you are going while you watch the gear indicator during acceleration! I don't thank anyone needs the gear indicator when driving its to be in the right gear when starting and after that the bike will tell you when to shift

Little indicator light would be a convenience, not a driving aid. I for one have, for one reason or another, started to take off from a stop while in 3rd, 4th or even 5th gear. I would have one if they were 50 bucks instead of 150..And Jimbo, a friend of mine says if you have a windshield on your bike, you are not a biker at all..No need to insult..
