This might be an update for anyone looking for the Fram CH6009 oil filter. I checked with 3 different Autozone places and their computers said the same thing. They don't carry it anymore and the manufacturer doesn't make it anymore. But I did not check any other parts stores for it. Dealer was only $8.

Any way to get the brake pad information for the GL1100 corrected in the first post? Just about all the information on brake pads for '82 and '83 are incorrect...

Just FYI. Radiator hose for a 85 1200a advance auto parts, part number E71604CS "Curved radiator hose" around 12 bucks. I can get two uppers and two mabey three lowers out of this one hose. YMMV Air filter, my (85 1200a) and i guess all other like year models look like an industral air filter for 0-turn mower or wood chipper, however since the prices are pretty fair online i dont think i will be looking very hard for one localy but if i find one i will post it. advance auto parts here in lexington kentucky has plenty of the fram oil filters which sits next to the motorcycle oil, i picked up three off the shelf just for GP along with 4 qts of valvoline 4stroke motorcycle oil and a new stant thermo stat. just to recap parts numbers for my 85 gl1200a. advance auto parts, radiator hose: pn/ E71604CS. 11.99 Stant, Thermostat: pn/ 13868 7.98 Fram, Oil filter: pn/ CH6009 3.77 valvoline: motorcycle oil, pn/vv740 3.99 per qt Last edited on Tue Sep 9th, 2008 04:19 am by lm921 ____________________ "It is the tradition that a Kentuckian never runs. I just discovered today that an equivalent to the Stant 10229 radiator cap for a GL1100 is CarQuest Part 33030. Its on my bike now and working well.

New info from Randakk's site..idle air screw replacement Kawasaki part 16014-1080. Retail $10.36 each. Comes with the spring, washer and o-ring. This part is the exact same part used on Honda CBX, GL1100, CX500, DOHC-4 and many other Hondas of this vintage (but not GL1000). Someone with the POWER,,may want to add this to the big list at the beginning of this thread,,, Last edited on Tue Feb 3rd, 2009 03:42 pm by RB ____________________ 1981 GL1100I Daily rider 1976 GL1000 Sulfur Yellow sold 1979 GL1000 parting out PM if you're looking for something 1975 sold 1978 sold 1981 sold 1982 sold 1982 sold 1983 Apsy sold FAIR WINDS, RB |

I got this from a Gwwra site somewhere, the writer is Bob White from South Carolina: He gives cudos to Paul Postle, AA/R (and Tech Advisor) of Chapter "J", Myrtle Beach. I feel it is worth posting here. Re: More on Oil Filter -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [ Post A Reply] [ Return to Message Board] [ GWRRA Home Page] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by Bob White on May 11, 1997 at 17:38:55: In Reply to: More on Oil Filter posted by Jess Tolbirt on May 10, 1997 at 21:17:28: Several people have asked me for a copy of this article that I wrote for my GWRRA Chapter SCG newsletter back in 1993. I have made reference to this information in previous postings and I have sent it as a private EMail to those that have asked for a copy. Since oil filters are back up on the board I'll go ahead and post it. If you like it fine, if not, just don't use it. My skin is a little thicker now so go ahead and give it your best shot. Just don't tell me you've cut open a FRAM filter and compared it with others. If you believe that scenero, then I'll bet you bought and installed Split Fire Plugs and claim a mileage and performance gain on your Gold Wing. Speaking of spark plugs does anyone want my version of buy, install and forget??? None of this stuff is like new, I wrote it back in 1992/1993 as the Chapter Technical Advisor/Newsletter Editor. GL-1500 OIL FILTERS The original credit for the announcement that there is an alternative oil filter available for the GL-1500 goes to Paul Postle, AA/R (and Tech Advisor) of Chapter "J", Myrtle Beach. Other than the announcement that the different filter was available, and that it fit the GL-1500, several of us were skeptics. Herb Anderson and I went into the research mode to confirm the information that we had received when we attended the Chapter "J" monthly meeting. I had a point of contact within the engineering department at Allied Signal (FRAM) and we wanted to be certain that the filter met or exceeded the specified Honda replacement filter. Herb had access to cross reference and specification books at the Navy Base Exchange Service Station. So we split our efforts. It has long been known that there are oil filters from other manufacturers available for both the GL-1200 and GL-1500. This article will only deal with the GL-1500. FRAM lists a direct replacement for the GL-1500 Honda oil filter as the PH-6017. (A local parts house said this was a stock filter and was priced at $6.00.) This is the FRAM specified replacement filter for the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and meets or exceeds Honda specifications. According to my point of contact within the FRAM engineering department this is a "Wear Guard" filter. FRAM makes two different types of filters, the "Wear Guard" filter which has a filtering efficiency of 90.0% and the "Extra Guard" which has a filtering efficiency of 96.2%. The reason for the two different types is that several of the automobile OEM's tightened up on their new car OEM specifications several years ago in response to public demands for better quality. It doesn't take a college education to reason that the "Extra Guard" is a better filter than the "Wear Guard". It also doesn't take a rocket scientist to reason that if FRAM lists a PH-6017 "Wear Guard" filter at 90.0% filtering efficiency as meeting or exceeding Honda OEM specifications that the Honda filter must, by default, have a filtering efficiency of approximately 90.0%. No, I haven't tried to confirm that with Honda because I'll bet a dime against a dollar that they would say that was proprietary information. While I was investigating the engineering specifications, Herb was confirming the physical specifications. The only difference Herb could find that caused some concern was a three pound difference in the opening and closing specs on the filters internal bypass pressure relief valve. Oh, before I forget, the "New" filter we were investigating was the FRAM "Extra Guard" PH-3593A. This filter among other things is listed for Mazda automobiles. It is made in the USA and in larger quantities than the PH-6017 and has been purchased locally at Wal Mart for about $3.00, a significant cost savings compared to either the FRAM PH-6017 ($6.00) or even the Honda OEM filter. The FRAM engineer said that the PH-3593A met all specifications regarding burst pressure, flow rates, etc., etc., I.E. the PH-6017 and the PH-3593A were interchangeable, if the difference in physical size allowed installation. (It does.) The difference of the listed three pounds in the opening and closing of the internal pressure relief bypass valve was not an issue. Manufacturing tolerances allowed a plus or minus five pounds variance on production runs. If a filter is changed within the OEM specified mileage intervals, then this bypass valve, which is a safety device in case of a plugged filter, will never open. The PH-3593A is slightly larger in the overall diameter of the filter can, but it will fit on a GL-1500. There are a number of these filters installed on GL-1500's today. There is the question of a possible conflict with Honda on warranty coverage if you use a non-listed application filter. For those that elect to use the new filter and if your GL-1500 is still under warranty I would carry a Honda Filter in my saddle bag for a road side change out, if you have to have your bike hauled to the Honda dealer. The decision to use an after market product on your Gold Wing is your personal choice. I don't know how much time that Paul Postle invested in his research on this filter, but Herb and I have spent a lot of time and more than one long distance phone call to get you the facts. I'll voice my opinion here and it's just that, an opinion, the rest is up to you. The FRAM PH-3593A is a better (Filtering Efficiency @ 96.2% vice 90.0%), cheaper ($3.00 or there about) than either the OEM Honda filter or the FRAM PH-6017 ($6.00) filter. It fits and it works. The above information is for your use. I have over 40,000 (+) miles on my '93SE using a FRAM PH3593A oil filter. Ride Safe, Bob White, Charleston, SC

Just a note on timing belts for the GL-1000. I went to Advance Auto Parts to get belts and found out that the Dayco #95070, Gates #5119 & # T247, NAPA # 250247 and Goodyear #40274 are all too long. The Honda Belt has 86 teeth (or cogs if you prefer) and is .75 In. wide. Advance Auto Parts is doing a search for me to find the right size. So far the closest has the right width but has only 83 teeth (or cogs). I'll update as soon as I know more. I'm still looking for aftermarket ignition points also.

What Timing belt not to use on a GL1100. When I visited my local auto parts store with the list of belt part numbers for my GL1100 (from this stie) they cross referenced it to a Dayco 95070. You might want to put a warning that this one does not work. It is the right width and tooth pitch but it is a couple teeth too long for the idlers to take up the slack. They were the least expensive option too, so it was real inviting. The Gates T274 worked fine. In regard to the temp switch for the fan, this is the same switch as the early Civic/Accords used in the bottom of the radiators for the same service. The color of the potting material indicates the temp the switch actuates. I remember seeing brown like my GL1000 has, on many cars. I've seen a guy selling a black one on eBay.
