Okay... a Porsche with two less cylinders (unless you're talking about a 914).

I've run with both the Harley Sporsters & Road King mufflers on my 77. I have incoporated a cross over pipe into the exhaust.

Recently I was doing some searching for exhaust info and ended up on a couple of Harley sites because they know more about Harleys than I do. Too make a long story short all of these later Harley factory mufflers run with a cross over pipe in the system. In the case of the Road Kings if you look down the rear portion you can see that both mufflers are different on the inside. The way it works with a Harley is the right exhaust exhausts most of the exhaust at idle and then as it speeds up more exhaust starts coming out of the left side. This is what gives them there unique sound. The right side muffler scavenges more exhaust. I know on my wing at idle you can feel & hear a totally different exhaust sound out of the right muffler verses the left. There is hardly any exhaust coming out of the left side. As the revs go up the exhausts flow about the same. The sound also changes as the revs go up from the Harley potato, potato, potato sound to more like the higher note of a superbike.

I have no idea how they work or flow without the cross over pipe. Just thought I'd add this little bit of research.

Here is a set of Harley Sportster mufflers on a '80 GL1100 Vetter Bagger. They sweep up and look almost  original.

Here are the mufflers I bought on ebay for $35 for the pair.

To install them on a '80-83 GL1100, you have to cut your old mufflers off to reuse your headers. First, (after removing them from the bike and splitting them at the crossover - I cut them off on the bike)  cut the mufflers off just behind the crossover.  I used a sawzall with a long metal cutting blade.

Then, using a die grinder, I carefully cut off the chrome outer shell right behind the header/muffler weld. Careful not to cut through the inner pipe. This is how it looked after I was done:

Then, after figuring getting my mufflers, and measuring them, and figuring out the crossover location, and the center stand clearances, I trimmed of the pipe and welded on a  1 7/8" ID x 1 3/4" OD exhaust adapter from the the Autozone autopart store:

Then, I fitted a crossover pipe that cleared the center stand and the rear tire. I am using newer HD Sportster pipes that have a crossover. I needed to cut/bend the crossover to the right angle, and this was trial and error until it finally fitt. Here is how it looks:

Here is a side view of it after all fitting:

And from the rear with the bags on:

Now- the truth is, after this step, I got a bug to strip the bike to restore it as best I can and this is where I stopped on the exhaust install. I have the bike about ready to reassemble and will post the completed bike in about 2 more weeks, but I thought this might be helpful.

Mark

Painting the custom extension flat black and making it a little fatter might make it look a little more like the original, not that it looks bad as is.

i did almost the same thing on an 82 wing but used the mufflers off of a 1340 ultra glide and cut just behind the weld after the taper on those and welded them in worked great.

Day before yesterday, I was returning home on the GW, I was in the fast lane, a pickup was in the slow lane, we had just departed a signal light, I was right beside the truck, he decided to change lanes, almost pulled into me, I had to divert to the center median, was thinking, if I had been riding a Harley, he likely would have heard me if I happened to be in his blind spot. I'm one of those who believe there's something to be said about a little noise relative to safety. Using those Sportster mufflers, in my opinion, is a great idea!
