I knew my belt was near death last winter so I sent it to Sierra elect for a re-work. I ask for new rubber wherever possible only to get a call from their tech saying that there was none available!:X So for $96 bucks you basically get a cleaning and nothing more! I knew a local elec. wholesale place here in Indy carried lots of belts so I waited for mine to break... This week the wait was over!:clapper: LOL

So I went there with the old belt in hand. They have a tool that measures the thickness and length of square and round belts. Here are the specs for the 1200 cassette deck. SQUARE BELT. ,050" X 13 inches long. I got a .046" X 12.87 and it works GREAT!:action:  All for a whopping $4.34 and less than a half hour of work.

Simply remove the 4 screws that hold the top cover on and slide it toward the rear and lift off. Then there are 2 screws on 1 side plate and 3 on the other side that you need to take off along with the knobs to remove  the front cover. Now you will see 2 small phillips screws on the bottom rail of the cassette well. They need to come out along with 2 more in the right side and one off the left rear of the drive motor. Then you are ready to lift the cassette mechanism out of the chassis. There are 2 elect plugs at ther rear of the cassette you could unplug to take to unit completely out but it's not necessary. Just flip it over and you will see the pullys and belt. There is a small circuit PCB with 2 tiny black phillips screws holding it in place crossing the belt path. Remove them and lift it free and your ready for a new belt!!!! I've attached a few JPGS for the faint of heart.  http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/hitechluddite/Laptop/Topcoverremoved.jpg

Many thanks! I've been meaning to give mine a tune-up as it hasn't been working well but knew a new belt would be necessary for the job. Now I can put it on the to-do list. :action:

My cassette doesn't work but I haven't attempted to find out why. If I find it is the belt, would you be willing to grab one from your source for me? :stumped:

If your deck just constantly changes directions then it's probably the belt. I'm not sure if they will be ordering more replacements or not. The first belt I got from them was a little too thick so it dragged at the beginning and end of the tape. I returned and tried to get them to order the most exact replacement they could cross reference and they took this one out of stock instead.  The place is called King Electronics and their phone # is 317-639-1484 ask for Fred or email info@kingelectronics.com

The belt supplier has a website. http://www.russellind.com/EVG/main.htm all the sizes are now listed in metric. You can do the math to convert.

The part# on the bag of the belt I used was 1407-470.

With the guidance given here I opened up my radio/cassette unit last night. The cassette has not worked since I have owned the bike (11 months or so). I found the belt to be in place and looked to be OK but perhaps a little loose. Any way I took the opportunity to clean up the fogged up display window as well as all the outside surfaces. It looks much better even if the cassette still does not work. I don't have any cassettes anyway :).  My Sirius setup works great and now my radio looks great. Thanks for the guidance and encouragement to tear into it!

If you are in a pinch and actually use the cassette deck, Radio Shack and many other such places has belt or rubber re-rejuvenator. It restores the elasticity of the belts. I used to use it back when I rebuilt cassette decks. I have a link to part express below.

I had planned on sending in my tempermental radio out of my '84 Wing this winter....

But, now I have to think twice if they sent your radio back saying they couldn't fix it because they couldn't find a belt?!?!?!?

I had noticed most people had a lot of good to say about Sierra....

Surely there has been some kind of mistake? :baffled:

I had dealt with sierra in the past and was very pleased with them too. I bought a junction box for my 1200 off them and they were helpfull at other times. I was very surprised when the tech called me and basically said he could do nothing but put rubber rejuvenator on the idlers and clean/lube the deck.

I'm curious if anyone has had any work done on the radio side of their Panasonic radios by Sierra?

Mine is very fussy when you try to tune it...it won't "bump up". You have to either hold the switch to get it to "seek" or bump it up and down tons of times to get it to tune into a station. It almost seems like it's trying to skip over the station.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Doc

It's probably the contactc on the handlebar switch. I sprayed mine out and it helped somewhat. I may disassemble the switch housing someday and give it a better bath:cool:

Just ordered from the company and had a minimum order, so I am getting 4 of the correct belts.  I really don't need all 4 and if anyone else needs them would be interested in selling the other 3 at cost.  Drop me an e-mail at jakeblues60431@yahoo.com if you would need one.

Chuck, I'll be sending you an e-mail about purchasing a belt, if you still have them. Am needing to replace mine it seems.

Thanks,

I got my drive belt for the cassette deck on my GL1200 for $1.15 on a great online parts store!

This store stocks repair parts and kits for tons of old electronics including VCRs and cassette decks.  Good Lord, they even have vacuum tubes for guitar amps!

The site is http://www.studiosoundelectronics.com

Great site, great service. I received my new drive belt from them in two days.

The part number for the belt that fits a GL1200 cassette deck is SBS12.4 (Small Belt Square - 12.4 inches x 0.46 inches).  It costs $1.15.

I also ordered a bottle of belt drive non-slip for $6.95 to put some life back into the rubber on the old pinch rollers.  That seemed to work well.  It's not a cleaner, its a coating that puts some "stick" back into the rubber.  If you use it, don't use too much and don't get any on the metal drive shafts, as those need to be clean.

Check out the site.  They have tons of stuff.

Bob
