Hey Silverfox very sorry to read about your sons accident glad that his injuries are not too serious when I am turning right and a cage driver behind me I always give the hand signal for slowing down and turning right along with the right indicator this gives further warning to the cage driver what I intend to do

Thanks. Keeping it clean is a challenge in these parts though, with all the liquid sunshine we're blessed with.

Well he was actualy turning left off the road, so not even crossing the carriageways, but funnily enough, I do actually stick my left arm out sometimes to make the same turn, especially if a car is close on my tail as they often are, in these days of rush rush, hurry hurry. I also pump the foot break to make my break lights flash which tends to wake them up a bit more. We have to take the centre of the left lane just to make the turn on a bike, so you would think that they would be more aware of what is happening and guess that we aren't going the 10 yards or so further down.
Insurance company are going to come and assess the damage and he gets a hire bike until things are settled. His brothers jacket is torn too so that will be replaced.
I wish us older folks bounced so well, he is quite happily going to work tonight and scheming how he can get paid double for that!!!! Like youngsters he is now more interested in playing with his new mobile phone!!!

You appear to have the right idea. I carry out the same procedure when turning left especially when their is a cage drive on my ass My neighbour has these "back off" brake lights fitted and a little touch of the brakes seems to work wonders every time

It's funny you mention that. I had the thought some years ago, to put some halogen driving lights on the rear of my car, to really light things up when backing up, when necessary, and for the occasional tail-gator that isn't getting the message.

I did exactly this when I was a kid, and delivering pizzas at night - primarily for use in backing up long dark farm driveways. But I did put a switch on the dash so that they could be used to, let's say, communicate with the person behind me. The almost universal response was continual high beams from the driver behind.

None of this....... before riding
Oh yeah....seriously....wear warm enough gear! You can always take it off, but you can't put it on if you don't have it (or haven't brought it). I find I get cold easily and that makes for a very unpleasant ride very quick!. You can't function properly if your too cold and shivering!

Lowering your core temperature (hypothermia) can easily bring on the same cognitive deficiencies as is exhibited when intoxicated. I couldn't agree more with what you wrote above. I've been riding in low-30-degree weather all this week, and getting cold makes it a miserable ride, very quickly.

This is the first time I have read this particular thread and I saw something this morning that could be placed in the 'I don't friggin believe it' file. Not that it is the first time I have seen it but it never ceases to amaze me how asleep people are while driving. As has been mentioned earlier in this thread, never assume anyone can see you, never assume they care if they see you, always assume they are trying to take you out. That being said, this is what I saw this morning. On my way to work, the radio reports shots have been fired at police downtown. Now I am sitting at a traffic light waiting for it to change. I am the second vehicle from the front. From my left here comes a Patrol car, lights flashing, and one can only assume he is on his way to the reported shooting. As he enters the intersection, with the lights flashing, does everyone stop like they are suppose to do until he gets through the intersection? Oh hell no. They just keep right on going, with one oncoming vehicle to the patrol car and he turns left right in front of the cop. Fortunately the Police officer had slowed down enough that he was able to keep from plowing into the dummy that turned in front of him. The moral of the story is if these rummies are going to turn in front of a police car on a call, they sure as hell are going to turn in front of you. So always be forever vigilant.
I realize I just regurgitated all the previous posts but thought it important enough to say.

What you said there Logtech was so true, if they are either unaware or don't feel it important enough to stop for police vehicles, no doubt with sirens and lights flashing, what chance do we stand.

Hard to believe, isn't it, that supposedly intelligent beings can be so brain dead when they get behind the controls of a two ton missle.

In a similar vein, here's what I witnessed yesterday. I was in a line of traffic in my truck yesterday (it was snowing, OK?), waiting to get down to a T-intersection with a stop sign, where everyone was waiting to turn right. I was on a regular two-lane road, right outside my work, probably 6-7 car lengths away from the stop sign. I was behind a bus, and there was a driveway from a building to my right. There was a guy waiting to come out of the driveway, so I stopped, let the bus pull ahead, and waved the guy into the space between me and the bus.
The guy pulls into the road, and to my horror, instead of pulling in behind the bus like any normal sane person would do, this idiot pulls into the ONCOMING LANE, obviously to try to skip the line of traffic so that he could turn left at the intersection. The problem was, there was a car coming towards us in that oncoming lane, which was completely invisible to idiot man, because there was a bus in between them. I sat there and watched an accident about to happen. Idiot man finally sees the oncoming car after he is already completely blocking the oncoming lane and hits the brakes. Oncoming car sees idiot man now directly in front of them, brakes and swerves up over the curb to avoid hitting him. They must have been no more than a foot apart by the time the oncoming car got stopped. Idiot man then reverses into a sort of three-point turn, and gets behind the bus where he should have been in the first place. The young girl driving the oncoming car looked visibly shaken.
That could have just as easily been me on my bike in that oncoming lane - and in another second, there would have been no avoiding hitting that moron.
