Help! I locked my keys and remote in the trunk of my GL1800 and can't get in. I know someone got in before by running a wire from the battry to some connector and this popped the trunk lock mechanism, but I can't remember how it was done. To be honest I wasn't really paying attention, after all only idiots lock their keys in the trunk.

I'm hoping someone here knows how to do this as you guys always come up with the answers. Last edited on Tue Oct 4th, 2005 02:42 pm by GWEddie

I would suggest hiding a key somewhere, or at the very least, the key no in memory, in wallet, or somewhere. Then you can run to keyman, and get another made. Don't ask me how I come to this conclusion !!!! LOL Write it on back of license plate plate, (or is that the front?), with marker, or such. Wish I knew about 1800, but don't.

You will have to remove the saddle for this. Then locate the 14 pin grey connector block under the passenger part of the saddle. Connect one end of a wire to the + on the battery and tip the other end to the red wire in the grey connector block. A short touch is all that is needed to pop the trunk. BTW, there is a yellow wire there as well, if you tip your power wire to the yellow one it will lock the trunk (if it's already in the closed position).

Whew, thanks Steve. The red wire did the trick. I had a job getting through the back of the grey connector without having to strip the wire, but it worked and the sound of the trunk lock tripping was like music to my ears. I had a harder time putting the saddle back on, those darned rubber spacers. I glued them in place on the saddle so I won't have this problem next time...
Thanks again, I'd have been lost without that tip.

Thats a great tip for unlocking the trunk. Another small tip, if you or anyone else needs to do this again just use a test lamp (the type with a croccy clip at one end and a pointed probe at the other). Connect the croc to the battery and just probe through the insulation on the red wire with the pointy end and this will pop the trunk without doing any damage to the wire.

Excellent observation Ted, most people wouln't have thought of that and would have skined the wire with a blade.

I think this is a thread that all GL1800 owners should keep note of, in case the worst happens.

Dick Elwood did the same at the Blackpool Light Parade - I got in his trunk in 10 seconds using just a piece of coat hanger! Understandably, I've been asked not to disclose the method I'm afraid.

Why the secret Nigel? I thought we were all out to help one another out. If odd methods had to be used (like big hammers or lots of tugging and swearing) then that's understandable of course.

So what's the point of mentioning it in the first place? I suspect it's a variation on this method anyway.

Yes, why post what you did and not tell us? It's hardly a state security issue. You could use the coat hanger on the GL1500 and no-one kept that a secret.
I didn't kno wyou could use the copat hanger on the GL1800 trunk, it would be nice to know how.

Looking at the wiring diagram Steve, it doesn't seem likely. The plug under the saddle is as close as you can get, the other side of thered wire goes to a relay, so obviously you won't be able to trigger the lock from the battery side of the relay. Pity though, it was well worth a try. Hope you didn't blow anything up on wexmans 1800.

| Update on this. One of the guys locked his keys in the trunk this morning at the Killarney meet n greet. It's an 07 Euro spec GL1800 and the red wire didn't work, neither did the yellow one. It's the BLUE wire that you need to tip the feed to on this year and model. The odd thing was that when I tipped the feed to the red wire I could still hear a click coming from the trunk but it wouldn't pop. I took a photo of the connector block and I'll post that here when we return home after the weekend.

| Well, for me it was a very useful thread. I work in road side assistance and one of the services I provide is unlocking. Now I can unlock GoldWings too. Thanks guys.

Here is that GL1800 picture I promised. The blue wire you see near the top right of the connector block is the one you need to tip a wire from the battery + to;

Hi all,
I just joined and I'm in need of some assistance. I also locked my keys in my trunk (2002 GL1800). I used a test lamp probe and when I tried the blue wire I get a click from the trunk, but it doesn't open. I then tried the red wire, but nothing happened. I then tried all the wires on the gray 14-pin connector and still nothing. The only action was from the blue wire and that was an audible click, but no trunk popping open.
I ordered another remote (FOB) and a blank key. Besides paying $100 plus for a lock smith to come out, do any of you have some ideas?
Thanks!

Welcome to the board Brian. the trunk lid doesn't actually pop open when you tip the wire, it just pops the lock and you then use the lever as you normally would to open it.

Thanks Andy, I'll try it again once I get home. If I hit it twice does it re-lock? What if the actual key lock on the outside of the trunk is in the locked position? Will the levers still work? If it doesn't work, I'll post a picture of my 14-pin connector. It does look different then the one Steve posted as it should since the bikes have different options and are different model years.
Thanks again for the quick response!
