85 LTD's and 86 SEI's were fuel injected along with the 1800's

Gentlemen, these issues have been discussed before over at this site,...              http://www.gl1200goldwings.com/viewforum.php?f=93          This is the  Back Yard Built GoldWings Bar and Grill ( new home since we had to move) which still has a lot of answers to your questions in the archives :) !! We also done some thinking about using fuel injection, but if my memory serves me right, the biggest problem was proper timing of the fuel in each cylinder. Again if my memory serves me right, they were thinking about using the Mega squirt system and placing it in the timing area and timing it some how with every revolution of the cams!! Sorry, I'm no tech Geek in this area!! I do think going this way (remembering again:D) there was also the cost factor as why it never took off!! Later,:cool:Bob                                  PS, LD's setup ( I think ) is best design because it's has no place for the gas to pool and the runners are less in volume, then if you had a configuration based on the CI manifold, Hope this makes sense and helps :jumper:!!

You can google ldwingnut or contact him at ldwingnut37721@yahoo.com.  I think you can google honda carbs and find him too.

Currently at the Back Yard Built Gold Wings site we are working on an affordable electronic fuel injection system that will cost less than completely rebuilding the original carbs and will improve fuel economy and driveability on 4 cylinder Wings.

R+D is underway on the EFI system and I will make the final results known when the system is perfected.

Remember that video on you tube we looked at about the acceleration of the single barrel webber setup being sold by the HLGroup?

http://www.hlgroup2000.com/

They said the bike is for sale on their website and I just found it on eBay. Here's the link to look at the whole bike.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-Gold-Wing-1980-Gold-Wing-Goldwing-Customized-GL1100-38-000-Miles_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4999Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem3ca5db2a87QQitemZ260480641671QQptZUSQ5fmotorcycles#v4-34

Interesting eh?

photos extracted for posterity, eBay will kill the link later. AZgl1500

Good looking bike!  It looks much the same from the side as other single carb conversions I have seen.

Bob,

After LD got the miter cuts just right for his tubing, he made a jig to hold them in so he could duplicate the process.  It really is a simple and easy setup to install and maintain.  It isn't for everyone, as nothing is, but it fills a niche for those wanting an affordable, dependable alternative with immediate parts availability and comparable performance to the stock setup.

Bernie

Looks like MSN doesn't want to support groups anymore. I hope they can find a new server. Those fellows were doing a good bit of work on fuel injection and alternate carburetor set ups.

everyone has to make their own conclusion, those who are running single carbs setups, will try to convince everyone that the single carb setup is the best... those with stock setup will try to convince confused ppl that stock is the best... on Randakk's newsletter i got a very interesting single carb conversions article. i already made my own conclusion. im not a carb expert nor a mechanic, but i trust on what honda engineers put on the bikes they created, they just didn't installed a complicated rack of carbs just to make the bike look interesting and believe a hard research was made.

No one says they are the best. They suit people who don't want to mess with the 4 carb setup.

No one says they work better than stock, but they work good enough to ride the bike, and get enjoyment out of it.  We do not use a single carb for better performance, better mileage, etc....

Please don't try to put down the people here who are trying something different!

William, I agree with you 100%.

But....

I also agree that an educated and evaluated approach is possible in replacing (therefore redesigning) the factory induction system. Honda has many variables in choosing their approach to induction for their models. One variable that stands out is their Dealer Network and Support system. Should maintenance requirements fall outside the realm of the average owner, then there is the solution (which American Honda would love for you to choose).

With that being said, I'm not much of a fan of deviating from a manufacturers design of most anything. Back in '78, '79, '80, etc., they would've worked on my carbs. Today is not yesteryear though, and we all know the grumblings of Dealer Mechanics towards older 'Wings. So, I've educated myself enough to feel confident in the approaches I've concluded. I've applied one of those approaches and am very happy with the results. I suspect Honda has in-house testing of the single carburetor approach that I and many others have taken, as it would be to their referenced knowledge benefit. Maybe they should've offered something similar as an option.
