Just a thought,....if anyone else has to go to the drastic measure of the drilling, how about using a hole saw that allows for a rubber blanking plug to be used to seal the hole. Should find something suitable from your local plumbers merchants.

This Forum saved my Bacon "AGAIN"
YOU PEOPLE ROCK
I found that after removing the lower trim if you lie on your back looking up and use a heavy wire vs a coat hanger along with a flashlight this was a simple task!
I used one of the wire stakes that came with my garage sale yardsign. it was heavy enough wire and i bent the last 3/4" just over 90 degrees. I slipped it in and turned it and caught the bar on the second try.
I edited Jason's photo and drew a gray line to show the approximate location of the bar you need to catch. the yellow indicates the wire I fashioned and about the angle I used. It also indicates where I slipped the hook up in from below. Just off to the side of the latches.
Thanks again

| I closed my trunk a few weeks ago, and it would not open after that. I did take a trip down a really rough road. I had to cut a hole (5" dia hole saw) in the back behind the seat (bummer) reach inside and remove the latch screws to release the trunk. After inspecting the latch the bottom angled on the opener had broke off and the "L" piece on top to make the key work was under the cross bar not on top to let the key work. To repair I had to buy some ABS and ABS cement (two part) and cut a perfect insert piece and glued it back in. I just saw how the coat hanger works, but for a trike it would have been very difficult without chipping the paint on the fairing. Last edited on Wed Sep 24th, 2008 06:11 pm by SpiderBob

Not too proud of this but I did something similar when I was working on the rear lights.
I had the trunk latch all apart to gain access to screws and it closed and locked itself .
The hanger trick didnt work and I didnt know if the hole in the passenger seat would work.So I just forced it and the piece thats attached to the trunk lid give in and I finally got it open. Wouldnt reccomend it but at least all I have to do is glue the piece back on.
Funny thing ..I found that the piece had been glued before so I guess the previous owner may have done the same thing

I have a 1995 Aspencade and accidently shut my side luggage compartment after I had unhooked the latch cable (inside the side compartment).
I looked in my trunk and found a hole plug that revealed a push latch which unlocked my side luggage compartment. See attachment for location. Hopefully the 1800 has something similar?
