That is exactly what happened to me on Sunday past. Pulled and pulled but no movement. Had to make the hole (as much as i didn't want to) then fish my fat fingers into the mechanism to find the bar and hook it and pull. Got it open though. Now I have a noce blue duct tape area on either side holding the cut out in place. I will get to epoxying it soon.

On my 94 SE the plastic clip, the one that holds the bar, won't stay connected to the lock mechanism. I need a new plastic clip.

The Honda dealer can't provide just the clip.

Any suggestions?

That may be right, but it looks like that diagram is for the side bags, not the trunk. This original thread was about the trunk, not the bags. Looking at the trunk diagram, I don't see the plastic clip separately - it may be part of the 'opener unit' (#44 on the trunk diagram of the link SpynCycle provided) which it a bit pricey. I'd keep an eye on eBay, as I've found miscellaneous trunk parts there. I think most, if not all of the 1500 trunks have interchangeable parts.

sorry, I had saddlebag on the brain I guess.

if the green rod clip is what you are looking for, an auto parts store might have one that would work.

or you could buy this and have 3 of them

Could be wrong, but I think what he is needing is the black plastic 'finger' which pulls the release rod down when you pull the middle lever of the latch assembly.

Hi this is my first time on the forum. I found it searching for a way to open my trunk. I am having the same problem with a trunk latch not working. Is the 88 and 90 the same trunk latch or is it different?

Pretty sure, but not positive, that the trunk latch parts are interchangeable on most of the 1500's.

Thanks I got it open. Took me 3 hours, but worth not having to break the trunk open.  I appreciate the advice.

A gentle reminder to all you 1500 owners.....
take a 300mm (1') zip tie and attach it to that rod and leave the pointed end dangling down to where the latch levers are under the trunk. Then if you ever experience the catch coming off the rod, you can just pull on the zip tie and release the lid.

This will save you a whole lot of time, frustration and in some cases damage, sometime in the future.
:waving:

Well I used the method of the bent welding rod to pull on the bar, after a few attempts ( about 3 hrs) it worked, thanks to everyone that posted the pictures they really helped, trunk now opens and no drilling required. Job done, thanks

I have not had this problem . . YET  (fingers crossed & famous last words  :2finger: )

CURIOUS . . .
"IF" you're working on the trunk latch and you're not sure if it will open, would it not be prudent to attach "the wire" before closing the lid?
:baffling:

Also, "IF" you're going to leave the zip tie connected, maybe bend it's viewable tail so not to be seen? After all only you know its there.... and some of us here.

Whilst I appreciate peoples concerns about security, I do wonder if a potential thief would anticipate the dangling 1/8" tip of a heavy duty plastic tie being the way in to our top boxes?
Rather I suspect, he/she will be a Goldwing knowledgeable thief and just use the levers provided, if they are unlocked, or they will otherwise use a convenient lever to force entry.
I am not even sure whether the Zippy Tie will open the trunk lid if the trunk is locked, perhaps someone with a 1500 and the tie in place might like to check for the benefit of the readers.

Not really a lock, as per say, it disconnects the latches from the levers.
