Are you in OD when you accelerate from 41 mph? You may be lugging the engine. They will "rattle" when you are lugging the engine. If it doesn't rattle normally and if you can keep your rpms up with out it rattling then it's probably that you are lugging the motor.

Some members have had success cleaning their engines out with seafoam and freeing a sticky lifter. Use the seafoam in the crankcase for 150 miles and change your oil. It will at least clean your motor up if nothing else. I tried that with mine, then even had a mechanic replace a valve and lifters, but unfortunately, my noise is from the crank somewhere. After all that work, he says I need a different motor. I still have the noise, but plan on running her til she croaks. Other than sounding like a diesel over 3000rpm, she runs good. I've even red lined her in 1st n 2nd to see if the motor would blow but she's still together.

With only 45,000 miles, I doubt you have any real problem. It's very common for the twelves to talk to you once in a while. If they get to yackin' too much you can quiet them by centering the rocker assembly. The procedure issimple and described in the Honda manual.

Another possibility is you are getting some pinging. Use regular gas in put some MMO in a few tanks. 89, or 91 will cause carbon buildup, as will lugging the engine.

You want to keep the motor above 3 grand, or you will break something. It's a motorcycle.

It's the gas today we have to run with alcohol Honda requires to run preimum 91-93 octane and the old saying cheap gas it may say 85-89 or 91 octane but that is not always the case.I have a 1200 LTD and run 85 octane and it gets 45 to 50 miles to a gallon but I don't know if yours is a SEI or not Seafom makes a carb cleaner and it is in a spray can and it will decarbon your cylinder it has instructions on the can believe me it works.I had a Ford ranger pickup bought it brand new and broke it in on AMACO 93 octane because my dad sold that gas I would buy from another place and cheaper grade gas and lower octane on a hill the valves would rattle and sound like a diesel .I would go the cheapest route before pulling that right valve cover off just fuel for thought. Take care and may God bless.
