The forum and site will be moving to a bigger server this Thursday (29th July) morning EST.
While NASSIR 3 was going on, the server was installed and prepped for us at the data centre in the USA and is actually ready for the move now. I wanted to give you all a couple of days notice first, hence the hold-off until Thursday.

This move is expected to result in improved speed for the forum at peak times, as the expanding membership and activity here means we have now outgrown our current (4th) server in six years. When things start bogging down it's time to upgrade. Our monthly bandwidth now always exceeds 140GBs and exceeded 160GBs in one month this year.

I managed to do a deal in that I paid $600 up-front for the hosting company to purchase the server for us so we could have it now and not wait until later this year for them to buy it.

Points to note;

1. The server move commences sometime Thursday morning EST (I can't yet give a precise time) and should be completed the same day.

2. Your forum email notifications will probably be hit and miss (coming in trickles and floods) for a week or so while the new DNS numbers settle down.

3. The unfinished/aborted forum Search Function rebuild that took several days (and didn't complete) a couple of months ago will be finished during the move. Tanygaer has created a routine which will rebuild the entire Search database for us in a few hours.

Thanks Steve!!

What is to become of the old server? Do you resell to offset the $600?

We don't own the current server Mike, we lease it at $200 per month.
We won't own the new one either, the $600 I paid up-front will be applied to our accounts hosting credits which means we will be recuperating the money in the shape of three months hosting. That's part of the deal I made, and I think I did well.
The hosting company gains too by leasing our current server to other domains, they can easily fit ten smaller sites onto it. By handing over the $600 now, I've brought forward the move date by at least four or five months.

It probably depends where you live and what time you login. I work nights two weeks a month and to be honest stopped posting months ago exactly because the forum slowed to a crawl when hundreds are on at the same time. The night shift is when I like to participate here, and it doesn't interfere with the family time.

I am all for the server upgrade/move., thanks Steve. :bow:

Thanks Steve for always keeping on top of things, like looking out for the members interests, as well as this forum and thanks to Dave for creating a newer and (hopefully)faster forum search database function.   :bow:

I would not want to go through 'withdrawals' like I did the last time!  :shock:

Steve,

What you do can only be a labor of love.   It's clear that you put your heart and soul into this forum.   And it shows too, because it is a very nice place.

Thank you.
