I did this mod to my GL1000 a couple of years ago because one of my OEM coils was shot and I wanted a cheap replacement that had replaceable wires.

I left the resistor because I didn't want to take a chance of damaging the points.

The swap was easy, and the bike ran great (until the solenoid stuck and fried the starter). I can't say that it added power, or made it start faster, but it's a good money saving upgrade for the GL1000.

figured it out, thanks
I used the spacer method and I'll post pics as soon as I have finished my project

anyway, al lyou see has been cleaned up, for the most part. I am not
going to get anal about cleaning the inside of the frame and the wiring harness.
However, it is quite a bit cleaner than what you see here, so far.

I should add those 1200 coils to my list of 'stuff to 'get rid of' for cheap. I have a 1500 coil too.
