I agree with Ernest. I rebuilt my starter last year for like 25 bucks and the thing starts and spins great.

Thanks to all who answer and spread the knowledge! It is greatly appreciated. Ed

Wasn't sure if i should start a new thread or post on this one bought a Goldwing GL1100 for 400$ doesn't run ,the guy I got it from put a new starter in it,nothing else so I replaced the solenoid and got a new battery the starter just spins,is it possible that in didnt go into sprocket correctly,or do I have to rebuild the starter clutch, not looking forward to removal of engine I dont know much about flats, worse comes to worse I'll just part the bike out.

Garage
Could be the oil, some oils won’t let the starter pawls grab on in cold weather, put a light or heater on the motor and tru it when warm.
A new thread would help you out.

If you're trying to start it -10F you might want to wait until spring as the starter clutches work much better at riding temperatures.

Advise given here is free and comes with no warranty "Caveat emptor"

Jakes. If you go to the Technical forum and start a new thread with the title "spinning starter", I'll move these posts to that thread.

Why ain't we ridin'?

questions I would have are:
have or did you feel it go into the gears when you replaced it?
Can you tell if it is actually seated up to the top of the starter, by looking?

just trying to help.

These guys got me going, right.
