Oh, for sure ..... our experience with GWRRA is without question, a positive one. Like anything in life, I could point to something I didn't then like, or don't like today .... but overall ..... it's been great and I don't regret one penny spent on dues or chapter 50/50s or gas .... or any of the time spent with all that goes on keeping a chapter going.

When my wife, Carol, passed away, the GWRRA came out full force to escort her home. Her funeral procession was about 1-1/2 miles of JUST motorcycles, then about 1/2 mile of cagers. The entire membership of Chapter M postponed their activities to attend. Chapter R had 20-30 members show up. And of course our entire home chapter, Chapter P, EVERYBODY incuding some past members showed up.

That speaks volumes about the health of your area and the respect they had for you and your wife.

I joined GWRRA a few years back when I bought the '99 GL1500. My wife and I joined up with a chapter near us and we went on a couple of rides with them. We decided pretty quickly that we didn't like riding in a group - too dangerous to me. Also, the group rode much faster than I like to go. It was too white-knuckle. I like to enjoy the ride and take my time. So I'd ride behind the group and catch up with them when they stopped. Some of the members were pretty friendly but on the whole we felt like outsiders and when the guy running the show threw insults at me, we bagged the chapter thing. I'm still a member and it's because of the Gold Book. My wife and I take pretty long trips and having that book with us puts our minds at ease a bit. Wingworld has Stu Oltman's column which is pretty much the only thing I read. Don't need to know about the latest $500 piece of chrome frufru that I could add to the bike. Don't need to look at fat, old guys proudly standing in front of identical GL1800s. Once in a while there's a decent travel story but not too often. For towing, I have AAA. It's pricey, but when you call, they show up. If you read the Rescue fine print, they may not show up at all but give you a few bucks instead.
Chapter-wise, it depends on who's in the group. There was a chapter near me that seemed a little more blue-collar and friendly but they disbanded. So my wife and I ride either alone or with a friend or two. We like it better that way.

we have been members with gwrra NY-Y for 4 years and we have only attended the last 4 meetings, there were about 10 members and the dd was present at the last meeting and if the chapter didn't find a director they were going to close it down so the wife and I stepped up and are going to try and run this chapter any advise would greatly be appreciated since this is all new to us

sanity,

Congratulations ..... and any advise I offer is worth what it costs you .....

Meet privately for like a dinner, (away from chapter meeting) etc .... and talk to your former CDs about their experience, listen to what they say closely .... not so much for details, but for pitfalls they maybe fell into or avoided. Try to keep religion and politics out of the chapter social meetings .... though a prayer before meals is fine ..... great even ..... just no discussions. Remember the participants "participate" to ride and enjoy their Gold Wing experience with like minded folks. They expect to pickup some safety along the way.

As a past CD of our chapter who was very good at it told me long ago ..... "Run your Chapter" ..... meaning you make the decisions. You can rely on staff and participants as to likes, suggestions, ideas ..... but don't start with the voting. Just consider and decide ..... keeping guidelines in order.

"Friends for Fun, Safety, & Knowledge" ...... that's what brung them.

I joined up a few months ago after someone on here told me about the GWRRA. I went on a couple rides with a local chapter to see if I liked it. I did and I attended a couple meetings and it was interesting. Were going on a ride Saturday if the weather holds and that's what I was interested in, Motorcycle Riding. The towing insurance looks good and so far the people are down to earth and the meetings are OK. I like the safety stuff. I will like the 50/50 if I win it one of these days, so over all this is like every other group you join, you get what you need not what you want. I got my first Wing World a few weeks ago and it's pretty interesting. I ride a 1985 GL1200 LTD and I get a kick out of riding with the 1800's and 1500's, I can hang with the best of them. So to sum it up, it's been very positive so far. This is a good thread so far Larryinseattle .
