Boy, I've stepped in it, now...!

Greetings!

Been interested in bikes for a long time, especially boxer engines---And fell in love with Oldwings as a result.

Just bought an '86 Aspencade in Spiral Blue, 80k but a very unmolested 2-owner bike... The 2 were friends, and the last owner is a retired firefighter and pastor. It's been sitting up for about 18 months after the clutch failed to disengage after a ride, which ended up with a dropped bike and spooked wife... He isn't very mechanically inclined, so he sold it off. Aluminum and chrome are ugly, but otherwise it seems in very good shape for age/mileage. Unfortunately in the process of trying to get it running, he left the petcock on and it hydrolocked... Hopefully connecting rods are fine after all that. I've rectified that issue, but am changing the timing belts, oil, air filter, and plugs before trying again... Clutch master was very low on fluid, may have a leak but i topped it off and we'll see if that helps before I start rebuilding Master or Slave cylinders...

Oh, did I mention that i'm completely new to biking and this is a first bike? Yes it's a heavy motha and 1200cc's, but i'm taking things very slow after the MSF course... I'm sure there are worse starter bikes...

The plan is to rehab the old girl and hopefully work up to a cross-country ride in about 18 months... Big round-number birthday. We'll see, i'm not 100% tied to the date, I want to be competely ready... It's definitely a learning process. I'm lucky enough to be within easy driving distance to Randakk's AND MadStad!!!

Out of all the forums i've read up on about Goldwings, I seem to be coming back to this one more and more... There's an incredible amount of information here and a great community... Glad to finally be a part of it!

With no God over the state, the state then becomes not the defender of liberty but the definer of liberty.

Welcome from another Firefly fan. I personally wouldn't bother with anything but an oil change and a visual inspection of the belts before firing it up. That'll at least tell you if it is worth continuing. Good luck!

I'm very confident it'll be fine, the seller is a straight shooter and I know for a fact it was running, before he turned it off and left the petcock open...

Anyway, it's too late. If i'm going all the way in to visually inspect the belts, they're $7 a piece and I'm replacing them... Already have the belt covers off, and i'm midway through sanding and polishing the corrosion off of them... In for a penny, in for a pound... B'sides, I've got a bad case of OldWing-itis...

Firefly...best show that never needed to be cancelled.

I'd like to see Firefly released again, but maybe with a tweaked theme.

The Alliance has split into two factions, and is warring it out in space. Mal has brought privateers together and is acting as the de facto admiral of this new, ad hoc fleet supporting one side of the split Alliance. Kaylee and Simon are married with a son, who is a battle ship captain opposing Mal.

They could write stories where Firefly could last for many years, if they were so inclined.

I've got a "Battle of Serenity" license plate frame, along with a round red Serenity logo sticker on my truck window. I have a Serenity blu ray disc in my house, and another disc in my motor home. It gets watched a lot.

Anyway, enough of that.

You mention Randakks, so you've done some homework.

Good luck with the project.
