NASSIR 7 Planned Rides!!!!!!!!!!

We wanted to let everyone know that that a ride has been planned for each day of NASSIR 7.

Tuesday's ride can be called the Cherohala/Dragon ride with some other local roads thrown in for good measure.

Wednesday's ride is called Clingman's Dome ride.

Thursday's ride is to The Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley. For those of you who want to tour the Museum, Dale is giving us a group discount of $10.00 per person. The museum tour really needs two days to see everything properly so we plan to leave early and spend most of the day to see as much as possible. The ride to the museum will take a little over an hour.

I have been riding all the roads around Fontana for the past few days and they are busy with bikes and cars touring the area. There must have been over 100 Corvettes there this past weekend. Needless to say, SAFETY is our most important concern for everyone attending. So the group rides will be at prevailing posted speeds with pit stops scheduled. Detailed directions will be provided so everyone will know where we will be throughout each ride.

The temperature difference between the valleys and the mountains fluctuates as much as 20 degrees so bring adequate clothing including rain gear; just in case!
We will see everyone next month for a wonderful get-to-gether!

The ride to Clingmans Dome parking lot is a good ride.

Now, if you want to actually see the dome, you better be in good shape.

I made it to the dome in 2012 and it only took me 3 hours to walk it and I almost died but I do have a worthless right leg and there are plenty of benches along the trail to sit down on and rest. I took a group back there in 2013 and I stayed in the parking lot and that group were all in good shape and was back in less than an hour.

The view is excellent even from the parking lot and the roads getting there are great. Everyone that goes will enjoy the day

They are closed on Tuesday and Wednesday so Thursday was the only day available during our rally. We are excited about visiting the museum as a group!
See you next month!

Do you have ride maps you can post so those of us that don't know the area can see what and where we ride, check out the roads, stops etc..

I don't like group riding more than about 5 mostly or maybe 8 bikes max, so I'll probably not ride with a large group, but may ride my own ride and meet up at stops or such later. Sounds like fun rides and a great time, I just do not like group riding.

I really don't need to be in a group on something like Dragon, bad enough to be a hazard to myself, don't need to take anyone else out with me!!
3 or 4 friends along is an ok group for me, provides help to pull my wing out of the trees if needed. LOL

Chromo, The rides we currently have planned are not in "map" format. There will be individual sets of directions for each ride in everyone's packet. They aren't set in concrete yet except for the ride to the museum in Maggie Valley on Thursday.
Right now the Cherohala/Dragon ride is Hwy 28 to 129. Left to the Cherohala Skyway. Ride to Tellico with a few stops. Hwy 160 out of Tellico to Vonoire to 411. Hwy 411 to Maryville and lunch at The Shed. Hwy 321 toward Townsend and go right on the Foothills Parkway back to Hwy 129. Then up the Dragon concluding the ride.

I do understand your reluctance to group riding. I have been on several rides that had 100+ Valkyries in attendance riding thru the Virginia/West Virginia coal fields. Narrow twisty mountain roads with riders of all skill levels. Our rides went without injury or accident, primarily because we always ride with safety as our first motive. I am not the most skilled rider in our group but I am a safe rider and you are welcome to ride with me. I do plan to go over group riding with everyone, hopefully to give tips on where to ride, what to watch for, hand signals etc.

The second day's ride to Clingman's Dome will start with a ride down The Dragon and turning right on The Foothills Parkway. Go right on 321 and go to Townsend. Go left to the Sugarland Visitor's Center North of Gatlinburg. Then up the mountain toward Cherokee to Clingman's Dome on the top of the Mountain. Then to Cherokee, Bryson City and Hwy 28 back to Fontana.

Again, we could replace these rides if another ride is submitted that sounds better. The fact is, there isn't a bad ride anywhere in the NC, TN, SC area!

The Dragon is a 20 MPH ride tops, especially with a group. I followed three bikes down the Dragon Monday that had their flashers on and riding slowly. I believe the lead rider was showing al least one of the others how to safely ride it.

I do not currently have a CB radio so I am looking for someone to lead the ride/s so that proper communications can be maintained between the lead and drag bikes. Help would be much appreciated. Ninety-nine percent of my riding is done without other riders so I would prefer not to have to buy a CB if possible.

I hope this is a useful preview to the rides currently scheduled, as well as, the posted area rides already in place that are available to smaller groups.

Another idea is, that smaller groups can follow or lead without worrying about riding in the main group. This is a very flexible situation and can accommodate everyone!

This is my first NASSIR so comments and suggestions will be appreciated.

Bernie, I've got a CB on my bike and are willing to run "Snowman" for a ride or 2, depending on what I need to volunteer for. It's not working at the present but it will by NASSIR time!

Now then... Who want's to be "The Bandit"??!!!

Roscoepc, good to hear from you! We would love to have you ride drag for us! It will be good to see you again. I may have to break down and buy a bike CB. All this hi tech stuff is beyond me!

Hi Tech?? My CB is a simple Cobra 19 that I mounted to the left side fairing. Yes, I have to use a hand mike but I've got it down to where there's a minimum of hand movement so it's pretty safe to use..
