Can you "hide" threads???

Question...

Can you "hide" threads???

It's not that things offend me but I really like the "Recent Discussions" module on the left. I use it +90% of the time.

There is usually a lot of "games" that show up in there. IE: Alphabet Game, Alphabet Game Mark II, Another Alphabet Game, Deer Alerts, etc.

I don't follow them at all. Just not my cup of tea.

This morning 9 of the 10 slots in the Recent Discussions module were games and they usually occupy at least 1/3 of that area.

Is there any way I can "hide" a thread and have it NOT show up in there so I can see what is more relevant to me? This would be awesome!!!

Thanks,

Tim

What version are you using? I have never seen any recent discussions module on the left, or anywhere else.

Hahahaha....

I am sorry guys. I work with a lot of content management systems that make up websites like our wonderful forums here.

We refer to "modules" and "positions" in describing events/items and places.

Yes, indeed I am referring to the "Recent Discussions" area. I am using just the regular old website. No app or anything like that. Phones are to call people and not browse web sites.

Tim,

Here is how I "hide forums"

Let's just say that you have no interest in the Games area.

Click on Games so that the only thing you see is "Games",
then click on "Quick links" and then click on "Mark this forum read"

that will mark every thread in the Fun 'n Games forum as having been read.
Now when you click on "New Posts" nothing in that forum will show up until someone posts to a thread there.

I do this every day, the first forum that I want to look at is "New Members" to see if there is anyone that has signed on and has to "be approved" by a Moderator.
All newbies now are only allowed to post in the "New Members" forum until a Moderator "Approves them".

we had to do that to stop the spammers and porn jockies from taking us over. You should have noticed that we just don't have that kind of threads here anymore.

You can do this for any Forum.
You can also select just a Forum to view only topics posted within that one forum.

For me as a Moderator, it is important that I always use "New Posts" so that I can see the activity regardless of Forum. but, once I see that the "new posts" are clean in a forum, I mark that one Forum Read..... that gets it out of the way.

We currently don't have a way to exclude single threads.
You can mark a single thread as a Subscription and then you will get an email with that thread is added to. And then in your Email Inbox, you can setup a filter to trap anything from the forum into a Folder.... then that folder will hold only threads that you have subscribed to. Doing this, will indeed Hide the Entire collection of all threads, regardless of what forum they are posted in.

The caveat to any of these methods is that it temporarily hides everything for a while.

The Email method hides the entire forum period,,,,,,,,,
if the only interest you have is just one or two or three threads out of the whole entire collection of forums.

there is one other feature available....

If you use "New Posts" and then scan down the list and click on only the threads that interest you, you can quickly clean out the threads "of interest"

Let's say you only want to see one thread out of the entire collection of forums.....
Find that one thread, read the "new posts" in that one thread, back up to see all the threads and "new posts".... now go to the top of the page and click on "Quick Links"

open that up and you will now see "Mark All Forums Read"....
that hides the entire family of forums until someone posts to a thread somewhere.

as a moderator, I do this quite a lot if I don't have time, or interest in any of the existing threads .... I mark the entire forum as Read, all at once.

All of this precludes you from ever seeing any of the threads you marked AS READ unless you purposely open that one thread and go thru it again, page by page.

so, there are caveats to any of the "mark as read" methods. you just need to be aware of what you are excluding temporarily.
