Hello Gentlemen, It sounds like 2 of you are using the 28/30 Weber!! I'm sure using a single barrel will be simpler ( like my Holley 1940 carb ) which has been for me very easy to maintain over the years. The only draw back (for me) is somewhat the lack of power for passing butat least it's beenestablished a 32/36 works well once it's set up properly! Cap what does your bike idle at, .. I have to keep mine set at about 1100rpm? All most at the end of the month, how's your conversion coming!! Don't know about cams but my understanding is if you have a racing cam ( I guess ) it has difficult idling:shock:,.... Still learning!!! Had to put mine conversion on the back burner,..... Piggy Flu:X,..... need some updates!!!!umpkin::waving:Bob
Hey, Bob.
Hope you are feeling better.
Did you go and get the shot or did you come down with the flu on your own?
I won't get the shots or the nose snort or what ever they are pushing here. I always get sick from them. I figure I would rather save the money for gas or something else useful. I can always get the flu on my own. Usually I don't.
Took my Wing out for a few short mile, mile and a half rides yesterday. Never left the developement, cause I don't have the headlight and turn signals on yet. Do that today, I think.
May change the name to Raped Ape.:cooldj: Definitley a fast bike!:action:
Cut two 36" long tubes of inch and three quarter exhaust I bought from NAPA. Sure it's loud , but my neighbors don't seem to object yet.
More later on it, unless I'm riding. Then it might take a while to get back to anyone.
Pics when I can.
Hello AZ, Got my usual seasonal shot and was doing ok but then:shock:,........ thanks to my G-children one of those had pig flu and gave it to me!! I've just had terrible headaches and nausea, no energy whatsoever!! I have heard some like you get a reaction to the shots,.. sure would love to work on bike though. Been raining too much to even do anything!!! Later:waving:Bob
I finally got my LDWINGNUT manifold and Solex 30 Pic carb. put on the ole 79.
Had to advance the timing a lot to get it to run. No wonder it did not like to start good on the old carbs!!!!!!!!
I still have a bog situation when I hit the throttle hard. I drilled out a main jet to .060" and will see how that runs.
I checked the spark plugs and they were very clean with some tan color, so it is not running rich. This was running a .050 main jet.
Any ideas on the bogging situation will be appreciated.
Captain,
I can adjust the throttle and it pulls good, no problem getting rpm up. I put a drilled out main jet in, drilled to .060" will see if that helps. May need to advance the timing some more.
78azwing,
Got the CI manual, I need to check timing, have it advanced a lot, not sure how much. Need to check my wieghts behind the plate and make sure they are working properly.
Time to break out the ole timing light, have not used that thing for a long time.
You will need one of those screw in sight glasses, CrescentMoon.com has them.
And in some of my reading somewhere on one of the multitude of sites I've been to trying to garner information on doing my conversion, I read that if you do an oil change at the same time and leave it a quart or so low for the timing session, that the lines are easily seen in that little hole.
Other wise the oil just covers the marks and makes it extremely difficult to see any of the markings.
John, just curious on a few thing things, what did LD say? And howold are your plug wires and plugs,; what are they gaped per LD's recommended settings?? Being that I run the CI conversion on my 81, I do know I had to replace spark plug wires/boots, new plugs(set to their recommended gap. Mine had a flat spot too, but I'm trying to remember what caused it! Also what is your idle set at and when does the flat spot occur; cold or warm, rpm, taking off etc..... Just trying to help, just need a little more info. Can you go back to the recommended 50 main jet if you want? I know these may be silly questions but are also maybe more enlightenment on the cause of the problems!! Let's us know:coollep:Bob:bat:
Hey Bob,
How is yours running?
Mine is imitating a raped ape! It is nice to have a running motorcycle again. If it wasn't so hot around here in the summer making it difficult to do anything, it would have been done back in June.
On the other hand ( I have three, don't you? ) My riding season is a lot longer, but then so is the distance for getting anywhere.
Actually,..... still on the back burner and fighting "piggy flu", anything I've been doing I about puck,.....! It's sad every time I go out and look at the bike in the garage I can't even workor ride it! Energy,.... what energy:X!! So did you get youridle problemtaken care of!!Laterumpkin::waving:Bob
Badorderbob2,
I am running dyna coils and automotive type wires and boots, Iridium spark plugs.
Plugs gapped about .025. Flat spot is just off idle. It idles nice at 800 to 1100 or so, set a little over 1000 now.
Bog is warmed up, operating temp. or cold. bog occurs at any speed, fast or slow. I have tried all kinds of setting on the idle mix.
I have 2 main jets, the .050 and the one I drilled out to .060 that I just put in. It was raining so I have not run it with it in yet. Plugs were very clean with a little tan color.
Maybe:step-up to a hotter plug with a bit more gap and double check that the secondary voltage is supplying enoughdown to thestrap....The tan(ish) color says you're in the appropriate heat range, but there are many areas of the plug(s) that can break it down even further...
Studying them plugs with a magnifying glass on all fronts is likestudyingyour favoritetextbook, sometimesclarity comes with repetition.
These are just my own thoughts,..... If you are running the carbon filled type wires I'd change to copper unless thisis what is called for ( not familiar with Dyna but if you mean Acell they're a good coil) with that coil your running.I wasalso thinking you may have to go back to square one and check settings on your carb from air mixture to main jet size (Back to the 50) , set the timing ahead according to the CI instructions. Have you also set your points properly? Also check to make sure you are getting enough fuel, (fuel filter may need to be changed)! Things just to think about, not trying to steer you the wrong way but just giving options like the rest!! Hope this helpsumpkin::bat::waving:Bob
I finally had a day to do some testing, once I got the timing properly set on the bike the manifold and carb. works just like it is supposed to.
I put the .050 main jet back in. I do not have points, I have Dyna ignition and coils, they work very well. The spark plug wire are copper and soldered at all connections.
I had to do some work on my Dyna pickup plate, it would not let me advance the timing far enough. Got the timing advanced to the point that the starter drug, tested, it pinged some, backed the timing off just a little. No ping, and it now runs really good.
Rpm runs up to red line just like with good OEM carbs.
I filled up with gas after all the testing and ot 30 mpg, not bad for all the idling and blasting to 90 mph and red line runing to check it out.
Haven't installed the Dyna ignition yet.
Advanced the points a fair amount, readjusted the idle speed screw for 1100 give or take 50. Cut that stupid plug between the alternator and the rectifier out and soldered in three lengths of wire to replace it. Boy what a difference!
And they sure do not leave much wire for doing that particular proceedure, either!
3k in first is right at 20 mph. Crack the throttle hard and she will lift the front tire off the ground. 3.2k is 30 in second. Same reaction when you snap that throttle open. 3.2K is 40 in third, and 50 in fourth! I shift at around 4k when riding. Since I replaced my speedometer with the one from the '76 I haven't been above 60, so am not sure what the tach will read for 65 and 70. 60 is 3.2k on the tach.
Only run half a tank of gas (according to the fuel gauge) in 65 miles, so am not real sure on the gas mileage yet. I do know it's better than it was, I was going through 3/4 tank in just over 60 miles before.:action:
And this is with the weight of the fairing and hard bags !
:bat::bat::bat:
All in all I'm happy with the way it's turning out for me.:clapper::clapper::clapper:
put some Sea Foam in and triple your mpg :action: :cheeky1:
