Replacing Win10 HDD with SSD story

This guy sought to stay with Win10 because his parents are used to it.

It took him 5 days to make it work, quite a little story there.
he is really disenchanted with Win10

My new 1TB SSD will never see Win10 providing that this new ASUS TUF BIOS allows me to install Linux on it.

You went through that with the settings and the trial and error of the UEFI/Legacy settings. I hope the Linux does better for you than the 10 install the writer experienced.

I put a 1 TB SSD in the wife's desktop computer and it took a little while to figure it out. The system BIOS would not recognize it as the boot drive unless it was the only drive connected to the MB. After that Win 10 was installed and working great. I liked it so much I got a 2 TB for my desktop computer and went through the same thing. Once I learned how to do it it went quick. I remember putting a 10MB (5 1/4 inch, full height) HD in my IBM XT and it took weeks to figure out. Once that was learned I was doing it for all of my friends. That 10 MB was great too.
MS has cracked the software subscription code. No more cheating. I live in Microsoft's back yard. The main campus is about 1.5 miles form my house. I've always enjoyed a stream of free software from my neighbors. When you buy Win 10 it can only be loaded on one computer. If you install it on another, MS will allow you to run it, but bomb you with unregistered software notices until you login your MS account pay $100 and register. They will require you to buy another license if you make a major upgrade to your computer like installing a new motherboard.
My copy of MS Office 2013 allows two licenses for installation on two computers. I have it installed on my wife's desktop and my laptop. When I tried to add it to my desktop it ran for a few days and then started shutting down as soon as it was started. It seems those [email protected][email protected] are into my home network and can see what is on my computers.

Office was probably trying auto updates. That's how MS found it.

I like to disconnect from the internet when doing installs.
that gives me a chance to set up the options for NO UPDATES.

I have tried several times to install my legally owned Win7 Pro with 5 copies allowed, and even with the internet disconnected, it just simply will not accept my License codes.... it used to a few years back. but it won't anymore.

I am thinking that the DVD has a permanently encoded "End of Use" date burned into the programming and simply refuses to let us use it anymore.

pisses me off, I only used 1 copy of it.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is. I'll be making 2 sets of recovery media for the Windows7 laptop as soon as the DVDs come in. When I was talking to the tech support at PCs for People she said a lot of people want Windows7 and not 10. I told her I am a happy Linux user and own both Windows Vista and 7, and that Windows10 lasted 15 days before being replaced with Linux.
Thank you for the Linux/Epson drivers, I downloaded and installed them today on the 18.3 Cinnamon hard drive.

I take it that the Epson drivers pkg worked and you can now print to paper?

I noticed last night, that you had downloaded them.

Can you recommend a primer for Linux? I put Ubuntu 16 on an old laptop. It ran well and I enjoyed the freedom from Microsoft. I never fully understood how the file structure worked. After 35 years of using Microsoft products all the way back to DOS 3.1 it is hard to change.

Are these open source or propitiatory drivers you speak of?

They do have forums with lots of info and they offer 'User Guides' I run Peppermint9 and have Linux Mint18.3 Cinnamon on an external hard drive. If you want to try it again, may I suggest Peppermint9 as it's very easy to use and very light. I have Peppermint9 for daily use and it works well.
