Does the pulse generatorshaft come outandback in without engine teardown? Not the rotor, but the shaft it bolts to. Looks like the shaftgoes through the back of the engine block and into a gear inside the cases. My Clymer manual does not describe removing/reinstalling it.

The back cover has to come off, then the shaft will pull out. There is a step on the shaft that tucks into the rear cover and that's why the cover needs removing first. Either way it's lump out of the frame first.

The shaft will only go back in one position as well as it sits into a slot inside the engine, so you won't lose timing etc.
