Where would I find the reference numbers for specific carbs that fit my 1979? Are there multiple numbers between years and within the same year?

Thanks.

From www.randakks.com :

4. Here are the US carb identification codes for the early GL1000 carbs (stamped on each carb where it attaches to the central air plenum):

1975 - 755A

1976 - 758A

1976 LTD - 763A

1977 - 764A

1978 (early) - 769A

1978 (emission controlled) - 771A

1979 - 771A

thanks, Raymond

Now, if I were to replace my 79 carbs, would you recommend keeping the same model, "stepping down"or "stepping up" to a 1980 or 1981 model?

cannot tell you about the 1100 carbs, but the 100 carbs can be exchanged. the big difference is the "advance" of the earlier carbs was richer and different than the 78-79 carbs. The earlier ones had the more traditional spurt of gas when opened up. You may remember older cars had an advance pump with pumped raw gas. if you really wanted to open the car up, you pumped the pedal giving it a lot of gas
