I have a 1996 1500 SE and recently the starter has begun spinning for no apparent reason. You can hear it spin when the engine is running and when you shut the engine down it still spins. It will stop if you hit the starter button a couple of times.

The starter has also begun to have issues of not working at all when the bike is in gear and the kickstand is up. This is an intermittent problem, not continuously. It will always work correctly if the bike is in neutral.

Any thoughts on if this is a reverse switch problem or actually related to the starter itself.

It is your starter button sticking ,,Put some wd 40 into the button and work the button in and out ,There is a spring in there and it may be corroded ,,If that does not work check the relay ,it may be sticking ,,But it sounds more like starter button not releasing ,,cheers Ciaran

These starterbuttons do stick, often when you are reversing. It's fun sitting on a runaway reversing 1500 when it does happen!

WD40 doesn't always work either as the starter switch is sealed well. Try it and see, but you may have to open up the switch.
