New to this forum and motorcycles. I bought a 78 GL1000. I figured it would be a great bike to learn to ride and work on. I have a problem that I thought I had solved but I guess not. When I start my bike, oil leaks from the manifold (causing smoke from the tail pipe). When the pipe gets hot enough, it burns the oil off (still causing smoke). I thought it was my Valve seals that needed replacing so I paid to have that done. Got the bike back and still leaking oil. Any help, advice, etc...I can get would be awesome.

Is it leaking oil or burning it? Can you see an actual leak or is it coming from the combustion chambers and out the exhaust as smoke?

It is leaking because it is dripping on my driveway. I have even put it on the center stand and watched it drip out. It comes out where the exhaust meets the manifold. (There is a hole that it comes out) Otherwise, it would just build up in my exhaust.

Hi s12Eaton!

I had an oil leak that dripped on the garage floor in my GL1100 - turned out to be a leak from the front engine cover gasket. It looked like oil was dripping from the exhaust manifold and then smoking (if the bike was hot) but it was oil blowing past out the front cover gasket.I also saw oil collecting on the right saddlebag.

I discovered this when I replaced my head gaskets (white smoke!!) but I would not have guessed the location of the actual leak from the location of the oil drip!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the heads up but it is coming from my manifold. I put it on the centerstand and checked everything. It is only coming down my manifold and leaking out a hole where my muffler meets my manifold (If that hole wasn't there, it would just collect) Any other ideas would be awesome.

Which side is leaking? Could it be coming from the seal at the gear shift shaft?

The only holes I can think of on the bottom of the Heads are the spark plug drain holes?? Is this where it is coming from?

s12eaton,

Are you saying that the oil comes out of the exhaust system, the drain holes under the bike?

If so itcould be coming from a head gasket leak or something else to do with the head or one of the cylinders on that side of the motor.

When they fixed the valve stem seals did they take the heads off?

May need to do head gaskets. Keep in mind that there are oil seals that go on the head/cylinder joint with the head gasket.
