I am replacing the water pump on a 77 GL1000 and I have an aftermarket seal kit that contains a seal that is too small to be thewater pump shaft seal that drives the water pump.

Do you think the kit has the wrong seal or is there another seal that has to be replaced that happens to be about 3/4 the size of the oil pump shaft?

Also, how do you remove the existing seal? It looks like you could just easily pry it out with a screw driver from the hole where the shaft goes through.

Thanks.

As I recall, the only seal in the front cover/water pump gasket kit was the water pump drive shaft seal. Sounds like they put the wrong one in the kit.

Yes, just pop the old seal out with a screwdriver.

that seal should have a 10mm inside diameter. That is what the shaft is. The size probably is stamped in the side of it. Check and make sure. Very possible you got the wrong one in the kit.

If it's wrong then just go to any shop that sells bearings and ask for an oil seal 10x25x7 (millimetres). They should have it and it should be quite cheap.
