my 86 1200 sei is back firing from the right side pipe this is as you set on it.what could be the problem.and how hard is it to change out the timing belts if that would be the problem...please help.

Hi ted... just a little more info would be helpfful.. backfiring on acceleration or deceleration? all the time or just once in a while? How does it run otherwise?? As an SEI, I guess we can eliminate the carbs as an issue.. but there could be other fuel delivery or ignition issues.. Lots of people here to help, but not enough info yet...

and I should have added that the belts probably aren't the problem unless it has slipped a few notches...

it misses about mid range and back fires during deceleration.runs smooth at idle but misses and back fires all the time

It may just be a plugged injector. Have you run any injector cleaner through it? I'd use a half bottle per tank. Usually two tanks is enough.
