I Just brought back one from the dead.

1983 GL1100, This is a Canadian Bike, speedometer is in KPH, other tags are metric,

but it seem like the POS was not too too bad.

This bike has not run in 10+ years, and sat out in the rain as the engine was full of water, and rusty,

I may change it's name from POS, to Rusty.

All cylinders were filled with water, and Rusted, Frozen Motor,

I could not turn the motor over in 5th gear using the rear wheel, it was frozen solid, a one piece engine, a boat anchor,

I was going to tie the POS engine to a tree from a chain and let the local kids use it as a pinata.

OK here were the problems.

1. Frozen Motor, all cylinders were rusted
2. Starter Motor Bad
3. PO said Low compression on one cylinder
4. Carbs were in bad shape, really gummed up heavily Varnished.
5. Water Pump was bad, it had a lot of movement on the impeller
6. All Brakes were very bad, calipers needed complete rebuild, Rotors were rusted and badly glazed. New brake pads
7. Low compression on one cylinder, New Head Gasket, and 20w-50 oil fixed that problem.
8. Rebuilt Carbs
9. Adjusted Valves
10. New timing belts
11. Sync'd Carbs
12. Rebuilt Forks, and rear shocks
13. Removed Exhaust, cut off mufflers, put on some Harley Davidson Dyna Short Mufflers, It sounds great

The new mufflers Sound Great (Not Loud at all) But more of a deep sound, you can hear the engine cams, loping at idle, it really sounds good.

Got all this work done in less than a month, about two and a half weeks

This is now a Naked wing, and is much Lighter than it was stock as a Interstate model, as all extra weight has been eliminated.

All Items have been fixed. Plus all maintenance items not listed were done

This POS Bike, Now Runs Awesome, NOW!! Very Smooth, & Powerful.

Another Bike Saved, and Back On the road.

Just goes to show that these bikes are ROBUST.

Well today I started on the next one it is my brother in laws bike, another dead bike a 1978 GL1000, Non Runner.

This 1978 GL1000 has not ran in 16+ years.

I hope to be done with this one in two weeks or less

Today I striped the bike down Carbs off & striped down the carbs, & Pulled heads off, and yanked the engine out.

I am tired, time to rest

for a good job.

It is always good to see a Goldwing pulled back onto the road and out of the garbage bin.

You did well to recover the engine. Any chance of some pictures of your Wing?

Here are some pictures while my 83' GL1100 had the heads off, for head gaskets.

PO said it had one cylinder had low, low compression, but after a new head gasket & valve adjust, it seemed fine.

When i first started the engine, Cylinders 1&3 were dead and just along for the ride, I could pull the plug wires on 1&3 and nothing, no change.

But cylinder's 2&4 were running perfect.

Cylinders 1&3 were WAY WAY overly rich, to the point of flooding

Another picture,

My 86' GL1200I (wine colored bike in the back ground) gone naked, always trying to get into the picture, It always wanted to be a 59' Cadillac, so it got the tail lights. I also put a single seat on it.

I may do a single seat on the 83' and more Caddy tail lights. I haven't decided. I was thinking about put a Memphis shades all glass windshield in the front, the quick disconnect style.

The 83' needs cosmetic now. But here it is

Here is the 86' Caddy

It is surprising how much faster these bikes are naked, and when you put them through major weight reduction, & removed all the bulk.

I will ride the 83' & 86' over to the truck scales and weigh them to verify their curb weight after I finish the 78' GL1000

Sounds great! Maybe there is still hope for mine to run one day!

Because Thou lovest the Burning-ground,
I have made a Burning-ground of my heart
That Thou, Dark One, hunter of the Burning-ground,
Mayest dance Thy eternal dance.

I had not posted in a while, some of the things that I did to the 83' GL1100.

First off the PO said that there was a Problem over heating.

I put in Distilled water and ran the engine, and drained the water,

The water was very dirty and had some oil scum in it.

Bought a Cooling flush, from Napa "MACS" and Flushed the cooling system.

then flushed out the cooling system with water, several times, after flushing the cooling system 10 times it finally cleaned up, and did a closed system flush with distilled water,

it Finally came out clean.

The over heating problem is finally under control & the engine temp. is with in spec.

One thing is definite, this bike runs better & better, the more I ride it.

One thing that I have noticed is that on start up, the engine No-Oil-Pressure light comes on for a second or two, after the engine is started, and the engine makes some noise,

I am hoping that it is the rockers clattering, but that sound with a 1-2 second no oil pressure (Oil Light is on with some noise) is worry some.

I am not sure if that is Normal.
