I rebuilt my carbs. Bikes been sitting for 6 years. Runs great. Problem idle goes up and down 600 rpm. was lookin in the manual and it says to set the idle screws to 2 5/8 turns out I have them at 1 1/2 turns would this cause it to do that. The other thing is when I rev the engine it stays at 2000 rpm and very slowly come down and I mean very slowly. No I have not syn the carbs as of yet. Need to get some gauges. Thanks....... JD

If you cleaned the carbs correctly, spray cleaning is not cleaning, after they are cleaned and preset including floats, bench sync and preset idle jet screws, then once on the bike and running you have to set the idle jet screws by the idle drop method and then a sync the carbs w/gauges.

That sounds more like a vacuum issue.

I agree with anim8or Earl here, does sound more like a vacuum hose problem, apparently it is common to have damaged/split hose(s) under the mat at the base of the carbs...possibly a filter issue?..assuming you did a comprehensive job with the carby rebuild, maybe worth looking at the vacuum side of things, unfortunately it means pulling the carbs again.Re. the idle screws, this will have a major effect with the mixture(rich/lean), didn't think it directly effects idling?. Mine are set slightly differently as I used the plug colours to gauge mine by, but the book adjustment is a good starting point I guess. The carb syncing I would suggest is pretty much the last bit to do when you know everything else is fine. I don't want to give you incorrect info here, as I have only needed to rebuild my carbs once, and due to lack of experience, ended up taking them out several times until I got it right!...so, if a guru see's any of the above as being incorrect, please post as such.
Peter.

there are so many issues here one how good did you clean the carbs did you assemble them wrong did you blow compressed air through them and may be damaged something like one of the diaframs the carb cync is another and also if the book says the starting point on the idle screws are 2 5/8 turns out why would you have set them at 1 1/2 thats a big difference and so on

Peter

Yes I have a lot of experiance rebuilding carbs. Replaced all rubber parts, carbs where dipped in carb cleaner. These things where in pretty bad shape. Alot of gunk in them most passages where pretty well pluged. accel squrter would only drip on one side the other side nothing at all.

Took her out for a good romping today. And adjusted the idle speed screw by the fuel tank. Seems to be better. In another tread here I read of a guy haveing the same problem and the vac leak was u8nder the rubber shroud below the carbs. I was going to check all vac lines under there and for got. Thats what happen when get to thing over a long period of time.

After I had all the plastics on I remembered about checking under the rubber. Wanted to get her back together before I moved to my new place. After I am moved and settled I will rip her apart and check all vac line under there. And go thru everything front to back. Now most of my experiance is in cars. After working on my first bike a few years ago they don't SCARE the crap out of me anymore.

This one does have the 4th gear problem. Have not decided if I goin to split the case's and fix the trans or buy a complete engine assm. Have found some at a really goood price.......JD

JD
Good to hear you did the strip down and dipped the carbs to clean them.
Did you change the gas filter? Napa 3003 is a very good replacement filter, it's clear so you can keep an eye on it. @$5.
